What do you snack on?

I'm trying to watch my diet and have been tracking my calories. I've always eaten a lot of fruit, particularly as a snack but have realised that it has quite a lot of calories for something that is not very filling.
What can I eat as a snack which will stave off my hunger but doesn't rack up the calories?

Not helpful as you've already said fruit but I snack on satsumas - often I'm snacking because I'm bored rather than hungry, so I like something that takes time to eat.

Cottage cheese, boiled eggs, hummus and carrots, baby bell, handful of nuts or things like the 100 calorie snack bar things from B&M. Can't remember what they are called but a friend swears by them.

Protein shake would be good too if you have the time to make one! The pre packaged ones tend to be loaded with sugar/cals.

Or the protein yogurts! Expensive but really filling!

A boiled egg or a tiny sliver of ham/cheese.

Honestly most of the time, just try not to snack

maras2 · 04/02/2021 23:24

Frozen peas, Smak mini cucumbers, Ryvita pumpkin with marmite .

I don't often need to snack since I went lower-carb. The idea is that your fat/protein based meals are more sustaining, and don't switch on your insulin production (only carbs do that), so your blood sugar stays more stable and you don't get hunger pangs.

I make jelly yoghourts (sugar free jelly mixed well with 220g high protein yoghourt just before it sets, and split among 4 beakers to set) as a sweet treat.

Other snacks - handful of almonds, sliver of cheese, mooli sticks with hummus . But not biscuits, cereal bars, toast - all the things I used to reach for.

I don't snack. It's not necessary, it promotes insulin resistance and it's dreadful for your teeth.

Homemade popcorn. Baby beetroot in vinegar (not sweet vinegar), tomatoes, carrots

FluffyBlueJumper · 05/02/2021 06:31

I have a planned mid-afternoon snack, based around a protein (hard-boiled egg, ham / cold meat or cheese), with a few strips of cucumber or pepper.

Other than that I don't snack. I have black decaf coffee if the next meal is more than an hour away. It is normal to feel hungry sometimes.

I think fruit is a terrible snack because all the calories come from sugar, which tends to send your blood sugars crashing half an hour later.

I like a small portion of sauerkraut (I love salty vinergay flavours and it’s great for gut health)

Sometimes a satsuma, a Longley Farm yoghurt or a Babybel

ThankYouDebbie · 05/02/2021 07:24

Bounce bar, Nakd bar, M&S chocolate-covered rice cakes, those roast chickpea things, Graze or similar nut-based box.

lachy · 05/02/2021 07:26

At the moment anything that I can criminal. my mouth.

I know I should make sensible choices
I know I should consider sugar crashes

But I want the chocolate.

lachy · 05/02/2021 07:27

*cram!

Although it is criminal what I'm eating at the moment Shock

LApprentiSorcier · 05/02/2021 07:30

For the last month I have been following a rule that I can only snack on things that count as one of my five a day - fruit and veg (each one counts); fruit or veg juice (counts once a day only); beans or pulses (counts once a day only).

ServeTheServants · 05/02/2021 07:47

Cherry tomatoes, low cal cereal bars, ham or cooked meat...and when I’m being bad (read: when I’m homeschooling and need something to motivate me through these difficult times!) a couple of rich tea finger biscuits. Loads of coffee

firstimemamma · 05/02/2021 07:53

I don't usually snack. Occasionally a piece of fruit or some nuts. Snacking isn't necessary, I just have 3 decent meals a day.

DianaT1969 · 05/02/2021 08:51

Are your meals not satiating? Try adding more protein and good fats to them. Not snacking improves health because you aren't constantly dripping insulin into your system and your gut gets a rest. Look up 'insulin resistance'. I wish I had known this before I was 40. I wouldn't have struggled with weight for 10 years.

EmmanuelleMakro · 05/02/2021 08:53

Celery
(Who am I kidding?)
Cheese ☹️

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/02/2021 08:55

Mini sausages
Cold chicken
Biltong

(And biscuits, which I'm trying to stop)

mylittleyumyum · 05/02/2021 08:56

Crisps. Two packets a day. One for breakfast. Smallish lunch. Decent dinner. Crisps with my evening wine.

EssexLioness · 05/02/2021 10:53

I have lost 2 stone so far and don’t snack very often. Occasionally a bag of crisps as I love them but if genuinely hungry it tends to be fruit, alpro soya yoghurt or some pistachios. The nuts help curb my hunger and take a while to eat as you have to unshelled them so it seems like you are eating more than you really are

countdowntonap · 05/02/2021 11:04

stave off my hunger but doesn't rack up the calories? The ultimate is a boiled egg!

CorsetLaces · 05/02/2021 11:06

Peppermint Tea (and I'm convinced it reduces hunger)
Banana and a small cup of milk
