Self Medicating With Food...Diabetes, Support?

73kittycat73 · 04/02/2021 19:19

Hi, I've tried to word/start writing this a few times, so I hope it comes out OK...But, today I have finally realized that I eat junk/sweet food to self medicate.
I have type 2 diabetes and have been 'getting away' with it for a while, but I'm starting to feel the effects of eating sweet food. If I eat chocolate before bed for example, I get terrible cramps in (Mainly my left) calf. Recently I have cut down on chocolate as it was making me feel like crap after eating it. I take depression and anxiety tablets and they make me tired so I thought it was them. However I have really noticed recently that eating it makes me so wiped out afterwards.
Today I was bored so ate a bit of cheesecake. Boy did I feel like shit afterwards. I was still feeling a bit rubbish a few hours later so I decided to dig out the old blood sugar testing kit. My blood sugars were17. In the dangerous category. (A non diabetic person should be between 7.1 to 10.0). It has given me a shake, and a wake up call.
I went to my Sainsburys delivery (Due Sunday.) and have taken all the sweet things out, including Pepsi Max. I drink 2ltrs of the stuff a day (I get 'cotton wool' mouth from the medications I take for depression/anxiety and just water does nothing.). I have read conflicting articles on whether Pepsi Max spikes your insulin so have taken them out my list too. I tried finding a decent drink that wasn't full of sugar or artificial sweeteners, I couldn't find any! So I have ordered some fizzy water and orange squash (With sweeteners.) to have it very diluted for some flavour.
However, like I said, it's only just clicked that I self medicate with food (Sweet stuff being the most.). I know I'll be back to craving even later tonight, or definitely tomorrow, so I was wondering if anybody would like to join me on cutting down on junk food. We could come on when we are craving, or just for some support generally. If you're doing it to loose weight that's fine too.
I hope I haven't gone on...I just wanted to be honest (With myself too.) and start a new, healthier, way of eating.

Aaaaaw, @travailtotravel, you’ve done it now, and I’m sure you’ll be back in the right place soon xxx

WreckTangled · 16/03/2021 18:51

If someone gave me a chocolate bunny I would eat it too. Tomorrow is a new day.

73kittycat73 · 16/03/2021 18:55

Thank you CaffeineInfusion. Smile I tried to get some of that Yorkshire Tea when it came out. It's good is it?
I understand travailtotravel, when the need hits, anything will do. Very good luck for this week. Flowers Actually, this tip might help both of you. I tell myself I'm not on a diet (Then nothing is denied.) I am doing a lifestyle change, and this means healthy as I can be eating. It's working so far...
Hi PaperMonster how's your hip today? Not to bad I hope?

@travailtotravel, not sure that came out as sympathetic as I wanted it to be when I saw it on the screen!!

Gorgeous weather today, nice walk, covid jab no 1 done!!

@73kittycat73, thanks. Not sure about more time off - would be much easier tbh. Really struggling with driving. Made an appointment today to speak with the GP in a couple of weeks.

73kittycat73 · 16/03/2021 18:58

Hi WreckTangled You snuck in after I posted there. Grin I've got a Malteasers Easter Egg sat in my kitchen. But I can't have it anyway as it's my mums Easter egg. Smile I don't usually pay it much attention truthfully, because I know it's not mine. What I do know though is that my mum's got me a HUGE cookies and cream Easter egg, with cookies and cream Kitkats. I love cookies and cream! (And chocolate!) I think I shall inhale it in one go. Lol I'm trying to tell myself I'll have a little bit here and there...lol

Congrats on the jab PaperMonster. You and my mum (Because she had her first jab today too.) deserve extra credit for doing it because of the scare stories about it in the press. My mum was like me, in my head thinking, 'I can refuse this, I don't have to do it,' right until the needle went in! lol
Glad you got a nice walk in. We're having the garden done at the moment. Bought some new paint for the fence, pink. Grin We're painting the benches lilac.
Good luck with the GP appointment. Flowers

How is everyone today? All good I hope. Smile Been a funny old day, lots to do, but not far to go. Going to try going to the shop again on Friday with my mum and the door closed. Anyone else got any plans?

OP posts:
WreckTangled · 17/03/2021 19:35

I've got my click and collect on Friday, need to finish it. Off to the seaside for work tomorrow (sort of Grin) will be nice to go somewhere different.

I can't stop eating at the moment. It's all low carb but I have no self control and am eating until I feel a bit ill Blush

73kittycat73 · 18/03/2021 20:08

Oh, enjoy the day at the seaside. Smile Do you think it will be warm enough for a quick paddle? Is it a sand, or pebble beach?
Sorry to hear about the eating. That's what I was doing to myself before. It's like you've got two voices in your head, isn't it? One saying, 'No, I don't need to eat that, I'm not hungry anyway.' The other just ordering, 'Eat it!' That one usually wins doesn't it? Sad
I was slipping myself a bit, but I've had a pep talk. I was slipping into 'diet mentality' again (Reward, denial, etc.) but have to remember I'm not dieting, I'm changing my eating habits. I hope you manage to get a handle on your eating soon. (((hugs)))
I think I had caffeine withdrawal symptoms today. Don't know if this was the cause of getting ratty, or if it was just my annoying neighbour (Doing the garden, he's getting paid though.) mansplaning to me again and again about how to store boxes in a shed. Yes, boxes in a shed! Angry Obviously I wouldn't know how to do it properly stacking MY boxes in MY shed!!! Git. Wink
Had a bit of a headache too. Looked up caffeine withdrawal symptoms on line and to my surprise it did say they take 12-24 hours to start (And 2-9 days to stop. Sad ). Headache and irritability are some of the symptoms. He is just annoying anyway though.
Gah, I'll stop writing now as it'll all be moaning about him! Grin lol
I hope you are feeling OK now? Any plans at the seaside, or just enough time to go to the beach? Have a lovely day anyway. Smile

Doh, after wittering on in all that I see your post is from yesterday. I should have looked better. I hope you had a lovely day!

OP posts:
WreckTangled · 18/03/2021 20:14

I was only there for work so didn't actually get to go to the sea. I was just visiting the area, was only there 15 mins in the end!

I don't think I could give up caffeine, I looooove coffee.

PaperMonster · 18/03/2021 20:19

Yes, @WreckTangled, I hope you’ve enjoyed your day at the seaside even if it was for work!

I had my covid jab on Tuesday and felt very headachey last night. Not managed a walk today but have been on the go all the time. The weather’s lovely here in the afternoon at the moment. Loving seeing my daughter play out.

73kittycat73 · 18/03/2021 21:01

Aww, that's a shame WreckTangled Anyway, maybe it was a bit too nippy for a paddle!
I like coffee too but can't have it a lot. I had a medical menopause and get hot flushes from it, and coffee (Even decaffeinated! Angry Grrr.) is a trigger for them.
Do you have one of those coffee machines, or go for instant? I usually have the Nescafe decaffeinated unsweetened cappuccino, that I add about four sweeteners too! lol
Hi PaperMonster How's the headache doing now? Nice to hear about the weather. It was cold (Very cold! ) and grey when we were in the garden. We came back in after a while then the sun came out and it was lovely! lol Grin

OP posts:
WreckTangled · 18/03/2021 21:03

I've got a nespresso but also drink instant. Black like my soul no sweeteners Grin

It was chilly here today and rained a little bit too. Can't wait for warmer weather.

If anyone likes ice cream I recommend oppo brothers as a lower carb one. Lower carbs and nicer than halo top.

73kittycat73 · 19/03/2021 11:54

ooh, can I ask where you can buy the ice cream from?
I got some Skinny bars from Iceland. I tried the mint (I love mint chocolate! ) but wasn't impressed. It was hard and chewy and was hard to swallow.
Going to go to the shop today with the door closed again. I don't feel as nervous about it today. I hope it goes well!
Hope you are all having a good day?

WreckTangled · 19/03/2021 12:05

Tesco, Sainsbury's and asda all do it Smile

PaperMonster · 19/03/2021 15:57

Oppo is good! I can’t often find it, but locally we’ve only a small Tesco and Sainsbury’s, have occasionally found it in Sainsbury’s. Asda’s a bit of a trek away and hadn’t realised they have it too! Need to stock up on coffee from there so might brave a trip out next week.

I’ve walked 10 miles today. I’ve not been on a walk, that’s just two school runs, tootling about the village and I help out at school on Friday lunch for an hour! Quite impressed with that!

PaperMonster · 19/03/2021 15:59

Oh also, if you’re in Iceland have a look for Broghies - they’re like big prawn crackers in texture and have zero carbs and they’re just so good. And I’ve not had them for a year as Morrison’s have stopped getting them in.

73kittycat73 · 19/03/2021 19:26

Oppo added to the Sainsburys' order, thank you! Grin I love ice cream (can you see a theme here with the sweet foods? Wink Grin ). Before I loved Ben and Jerrys Cookie Dough, and Walls Viennetta. Oh yeah, and Cadburys 99 cornettos. Yum! (I think I'm drooling a bit here. )
Well done on the massive walk PaperMonster. Star I've been out with my mum sorting the shed. Gawd knows how we ever got all that in the last one! What I can tell you though is my mum obviously has a thing for curtains and cushions. Grin Oh yeah, and Christmas decorations, all the christmas decorations! Xmas Grin

OP posts:
PaperMonster · 19/03/2021 19:43

Oh Cookie Dough, I used to love that! I bet my daughter would actually! She’s never had that!

Are you getting rid of all the cushions/curtains/decorations? Or have you been sorting them out?

73kittycat73 · 19/03/2021 20:14

Oh, I hope your daughter enjoys it if you get some. Smile
We got rid of all the curtains, kept quite a few cushions and all the Christmas decorations. There were Christmas rugs and all. lol

Morning. I'm doing a roast dinner later. For brunch I might do a bacon roll. The seriously low carb bread rolls are amazing! I'm going to start tracking with MFP again I think. I've also signed up to an online coach who I've been following on Instagram for ages. I haven't told DH has I feel a bit embarrassed about it. Plus it wasn't cheap. I'll tell him before it starts though...

travailtotravel · 21/03/2021 20:15

Found the Oppo. Easter treat for me there!

73kittycat73 · 23/03/2021 02:32

Here at gone 2am as can't sleep. Sad Have things to do tomorrow on my mind so head is buzzing. It's less than I have been doing actually so don't know why?
Garden is coming on nicely. We now have a purple shed. Grin It's the pink fence next.
Oh yes, I got some Oppo too, thank you so much for the tip off! Star I'm quite into Alpros' no bits yogurts atm. I don't like bits in food and drink so that's a plus. They are 100 calories and very tasty.
I hope you enjoyed your roast dinner WreckTangled. Smile I'm currently in a f**k it, I want to EAT ALL THE CARBS mood. I want mashed potato, chips, roast potato, tiger bread, PROPER FOOD. lol Good luck with your coach. What do they do? Exercise routines and diet stuff? I hope you have fun doing it anyway. Smile

73kittycat73 · 23/03/2021 02:33

*They are under 100 calories.
