Fire bowl/pit

I'm looking for a fire bowl or pit for my dhs 50th birthday present. I thought it would be an easy task. Seems not :( Some of the ones I'd like to get aren't available to order until March, and his birthday is on the 18th Feb.

I've seen this one which looks quite good. Does anyone have it or similar? Has it lasted well? I'm looking for cast or wrought iron and not steel. www.ukfirebowls.co.uk/70cm-indian-kadai-fire-bowl-grill-stand-free-uk-delivery-c2x11873892

I have one which we use as a barbecue and I really like it.

It weathers down to a lovely natural colour. One thing though that I wish I'd realised - we have tiles on the terrace and its legs have left rusty marks that I can't shift. So either keep it in exactly the same spot or protect your surface in some way. Otherwise it's great.

Ours is also unavailable, but for twenty quid more I’d go for the 80cm one in your link not thr 70. Thr bigger the bowl the better.

Mine hasn’t marked the patio but it’s sandstone.

Also buy a cover for it, unless you’re going to store it inside over winter, otherwise they will eventually rust.

We have a cast iron one - similar size but different style. It rusted quite quickly which alarmed me, but DH says it is fine and that's just weathering, not structural damage. In that tiny space between November lockdown and December tier systems, DC had a few friends around and they sat up all night around it. Worth it just for that single evening. They hadn't seen them in months. If we go back to being allowed friends in gardens, you'll be glad of it.

My old one, the rust ate right through it eventually and it collapsed, so do cover them or store them in the winter.

Ah lovely, thank you all.

That evening sounds wonderful @Labobo 😊

I was thinking of getting the 80cm one and will get a cover too.

Do they live in a rural area where they are permitted?

Not allowed to burn fossil fuels in most urban areas.

longtompot · 04/02/2021 10:58

@Dogonahottinroof we don't live in a restricted area from what I an see. We usually use a chimera and have had no issues with it. As far as I can see it's not much different to a bbq.

People usually burn charcoal or wood in a fire bowl though. I know that’s all I and my friends with them do.....

That's what we'll be burning in ours. We have a log burner indoors, so will have a stack of wood to be able to use in the fire pit/bowl (what even is the difference? I always thought a fire pit was one dug into the ground, but some of these raised ones are also called a pit).

I went for the 70cm one in the end, along with the cover. I looked at my metal metre rule and thought the 80cm might be a bit of a squeeze as our garden isn't the biggest. It give us more options on where to use it too. It has been dispatched already, ordered yesterday afternoon, and will be here Monday! Super fast! Now to try and accept delivery without himself seeing, and hiding it for the next 10 or so days Grin
