We're going to Hayle in July (fingers crossed) and we've never been.
We want a mixture of lazy days and some day trips of about an hour drive max.
I've seen that you could get a train to st ives which would be great so any tips or advice would be most welcomed.
Is there anything we don't want to miss?
Children are 8 and 14 and we all love walking so lots of outdoor things would be good. Not really into theme parks so wouldn't bother unless they are good value for money (and cheap)
Thank you

What a lovely thread. I'm from penzance and we keep a van down the lizard.

You need to search mermaid boat trips for the dolphins they go from penzance harbour. It was like a religious experience. I have posted a photo from our trip.

However you can see dolphins from the bluff inn too which is a pub on the beach at hayle.

St ives is crap to park in like pp I recommend the train park and ride the station is right on the beach it's great. There are some great restaurants in at ives and the tate is worth seeing.

Lafrowda is amazing though I doubt it's on this year.

Down towards lands end there is the telegraph museum and geevor mine which are really interesting on a rainy day.

If you go down under the eagles nest do not try and walk to pedn Vounder/nanjizel, be sensible.

Holiday in Hayle.. help me plan please

I live in Penzance - what a great thread with some excellent ideas. On a really nice day take them to Jubilee pool (in Penzance) it also has a cafe or we have a really good fish and chip shop further along the prom.

crackofdoom.. a happy accident!!
I'm very excited now
So many things to research...I plan my holiday like an army manoeuvre but so that we have equal mix of relaxed days and busy days
Thank you so much for all these tips

Agree with a lot of the PP suggestions. I'd also like to add Lost Gardens of Heligan and Healey's Cyder Farm into the mix.

Healey's do lovely food!

StillDumDeDumming · 04/02/2021 23:21

You lucky thing - we go most years but can't afford it now! Eat at duckies in town. It's delicious and Mike is a great guy. The Bluff Inn is completely soulless. Tremenhere
Is my favourite place -
Sculpture gardens close to st Michael's mount. The minack is incredible- the kids will love it.

I wouldn't do st Ives in July. It's really too busy and not really worth it. Falmouth has a great chain ferry too. Every year we'd find somewhere different.

StillDumDeDumming · 04/02/2021 23:23

I mean st Ives is great for the Tate, Barbara Hepworth house and the Richard burton museum (not really for kids). Defo walk up the beach to st gwithan lighthouse. Stop at the jam pot for tea on the way.

St Michael's Mount
The Minangkabau Theatre at Porthcurno, and the beach near the Telegraph museum are both amazing but very busy
Hayle beach is gorgeous, the one near the Haven camp and there's a great pub there too I forgot its name sorry

StillDumDeDumming · 04/02/2021 23:36

The pub is the bucket of blood.

Also spot terrapins in the millpond. There's been a colony there for decades. You might need to be patient.

Oh Cornwall banger racing is much nearer than it looks. About 20 minutes away.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 05/02/2021 00:11

MINACK theatre not Minangkabau (bloody autocorrect- it is a good name for a theatre though Grin)

PurpleFlower1983 · 05/02/2021 00:20

Carbis Bay has a beautiful beach and it’s on the train line.

ZenNudist · 05/02/2021 00:29

Lots of good ideas here. We are going again in August. I don't love it.

Brewupmama · 05/02/2021 22:30

I think we will try st ives just to say we have been.. We're not fans of the usual holiday places though. We like to be on the beach on our own!! 😂

Love love LOVE Praa sands (bodyboarded there on New Year’s Day 2020!!) and Paradise Park is great, too.

I love the Seafood Cafe in St Ives. Never a set menu for meat or fish as depends what they can get that morning. You queue up for a table at lunchtime, but need to book usually for dinner in the summer. Was always one of my favaourite meals out while on holiday.

CamperVan79 · 01/07/2021 22:59

Oooh love Hayle!
Nothing to add.. Enjoy!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 01/07/2021 23:04

Open air swimming pool at Hayle.

Just discovered there is a via ferrata at Penryn, going to try that out.

Geevor mine? Poldark Mine?
