Have seen male and female blue tits flying in and out of our nest box
Too early for babies ?
Ate they building a nest ?

They will be getting it ready. It is a bit early, though. Hopefully they decide to settle there when the time comes. They have large, noisy, very hyperactive broods. We had a family visiting our feeders, last summer, and mum must have been exhausted!

ZeroFuchsGiven · 03/02/2021 13:17

They will just be getting it ready :)

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/02/2021 13:20

Maybe just a viewing at this stage, but I hope they put an offer in!

AllTheCakes · 03/02/2021 13:25

Do you think they are trying to beat the stamp duty deadline?

MargaretThursday · 03/02/2021 14:04

Luck you. We had coaltits a couple of years ago. I really hope they come back.

darklady64 · 03/02/2021 15:10

We've got the same. I read that sometimes a pair will use the box to roost in when it's cold, and will then possibly go on to nest there. Fingers crossed!

Fresh01 · 03/02/2021 15:22

We have seen a pair of blue tits at our bird box occasionally over the last 2 weeks. They aren’t nest building yet as they aren’t carrying bits in. We have had a pair of blue tits nest in it every year for about 6 years now. It is lovely to watch over the spring.

lockdownrainbow · 03/02/2021 21:32

Lol 🤣 putting in an offer

So jealous. We've never had any in ours. Whereabouts is yours in your garden?

lockdownrainbow · 04/02/2021 11:27

High up on back of garage

If you have pets apparently they like to use the war fur for their nests so you can leave it outside pegged to something.

WhatAreWordsWorth · 04/02/2021 11:59

We spotted two in ours this week too!

BarbaraofSeville · 04/02/2021 11:59

We had a blue tit that would look through our kitchen window last March (I noticed it because it was in the first few days WFH which we we started before lockdown proper). When I worked out what it wanted, I gave it some cat hair out of the brush, which conjured up all sorts of conflicting thoughts.

We have starlings in a broken air vent under the eves and they've started nesting in the last few days. They're driving the cats mad with all the noise they're making and their comings and goings. I did think it was a little early, but clearly not. We say every year that we'll block the vent and put up a nest box in a little further away but on the same wall and never get round to it until its too late.

Grin Grin

I'm a bit worried about ours; they're normally all over the feeder during winter, but pigeons, magpies and squirrels have taken it over and now they don't seem to come

Is it just coincidence, does anyone know, or are they really scared off by bigger birds?

SmidgenofaPigeon · 04/02/2021 13:48

Well they are definitely scared off by magpies- magpies love eating blue tit chicks Sad

But sometimes they’re scarce because there happens to be enough natural food sources to keep them off the feeders.

WhatKatyDidNxt · 04/02/2021 13:50

Definitely trying to beat the stamp duty deadline. I hope they have a decent surveyor and solicitor! Blue tits are too cute! Fingers crossed they go for it

MrsFezziwig · 04/02/2021 13:53

I’m just about to put my bird box up having cleaned it out. Even at this time of year they like to scope it out even though it’s a bit early for nest building.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/02/2021 14:44

Magpies love eating blue tit chicks

Yes I know Sad

It's more the actual feeding I was thinking of though, since they're not nesting yet - a whole winter and I've barely seen a bluetit, robin or even a sparrow on the feeders
I've even tried explaining that they have to share, but somehow it doesn't go in Blush

SmidgenofaPigeon · 04/02/2021 14:58

As it’s such a shame when they stop coming. I only have a tiny window feeder as were a first floor flat, we get he same great, blue and coal tits and one robin and I’d be heartbroken if they didn’t come! Might be an option for one of your windows? We got from Amazon. They take a bit of time to get used to it but now they’ll be there bold as brass even when we’re right behind the window.

Wauden · 04/02/2021 22:50

I do wonder whether we are going to see this earlier in the year, due to the climate crisis. It's been quite a mild winter so far where we are.

PickAChew · 04/02/2021 23:50

It's been bloody cold, here.
