Fingers in door hinges!

Icanonlymakeboys · 03/02/2021 11:34

When I see my boys' hands go in (or near) door hinges, it really scares me. My other half almost closed the kitchen door on one of them a few months back. It seems that Amazon's best efforts will charge me £16.99 to fix two doors, but I have 4 downstairs and 4 upstairs, does anyone else worry about this or is it me?

No, I just taught them not to put their fingers in door hinges. Its harder when they are toddlers as they don't really get it so you just have to wedge doors open and make sure you look before closing them but once they get to about 3 they understand and are fairly reliable about not doing it.

Icanonlymakeboys · 03/02/2021 11:46

My 4 year old understands - but indeed my 2 year doesn't! With a 2 week old, I see this being with us for another few years. It's when they're playing by themselves (the older boys) and I hear a door slam that I'm like...eek. I have used door wedges, but apparently they make excellent phones to play with!

My friend's DD lost the end of her finger in a door slamming incident well actually it got lost down the sink when they put it under the tap It was reattached and looks ok now but it wasn't on my radar at all - we got a lot of door stoppers after that.

This is also an anxiety inducing event for me as the tip of my little finder was cut off owing to being shut in a door. I was about.

The line is where it was essentially chopped off and grew back - but is stumpy.

Chuck a towel over the top and wedge it in the hinge up top. Stops it closing even pushed.

TheMandalorian · 03/02/2021 12:55

You just need some finger guards until they learn not to do it.

Put them on the top of the door rather than the side.

Bluemandm · 03/02/2021 12:59

@TheMandalorian they don’t stop fingers being trapped in the hinge though, although they’re fab for stopping fingers getting trapped from slamming doors

I think it’s wiser to take time to install door safety in them rather than buying gadgets or jamming doors. The world is literally full of doors and you can’t make them all safe.

It was a recurrent topic of conversation when mine were little.

Its the upvc back door that terrifies me as DS goes down the steps. The cat had a near miss with her paw as the kitten in that door hinge.

justanotherneighinparadise · 03/02/2021 13:02

We have a huge rule about ‘not playing with doors’ I’ve backed that up by explaining what will happen and using things like a carrot in the hinge to show them. I think kids need visuals to understand why not to do things.

picklemewalnuts · 03/02/2021 13:09

Finger guards do stop pinching at the hinge end too. It doesn't close as far. Especially if fitted to the top of the door, nearer the hinge end.

Icanonlymakeboys · 03/02/2021 13:13

Just tried a finger guard on the top of the door but you have to put it really, really close to the hinge. I read that there is 16 tonnes of pressure at the hinge itself, are you sure those guards will take that pressure without giving way?

How are you putting the towel over the door?

I got a stick/twig and showed my toddlers how strong a closing door can be. Telling them was an abstract concept but watching the twig bend/break was something they both comprehended.

wizzbangfizz · 03/02/2021 14:21

My dd finger got trapped by her little sister slamming a drawer - we were everyone's cautionary tale for a whole!

Pugdoglife · 03/02/2021 14:32

I once saw someone lose the top half of their little finger in a door hinge, so they scare me a lot! We have the things that stop doors slamming at the top of doors and I always get to doors first in public so I can hold them open while the children go through.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 03/02/2021 15:50

Open the door, throw it over the top, folded in two. Slide it up to the hinge and wedge the edge of the towel over the corner and into the hinge. Fold again if it isn't thick enough to stop it closing.

I lost the top of my ring finger in a door hinge. It had to be sewed back together and is still deformed now. I was 8 and at school and was an accident rather than me deliberately putting it there. I still remember the pain...

So yes, I do worry about door hinges a lot! Although I didn’t do anything, just told my children continuously to be careful and showed them my finger. I like the idea of the stick demonstration!

LER83 · 03/02/2021 16:38

I got my fingers trapped in a door hinge when I was young, a neighbour had to come round and take the whole door off to get them out! I just remember hiding behind the door to jump out at the cat! No idea why i stuck my fingers in the hinge, got a feeling I was trying to see through the gap! No lasting damage, apart from one nail grows funny. I make a big point to my kids of keeping fingers away from hinges.

romany4 · 03/02/2021 18:02

I did this to my ds when he was 2

I can still hear the crunch...Never forgiven myself.

He's now 23 and fine though!
