Nanny travel expenses

Hello all,

We hired a new part time nanny and as two of my children need a train to get to school. I pay my nanny travel costs from going to take them to school in the morning and then when she is bringing them back home.

In the mornings, my nanny rides her bike and parks her bike near our closest station. She asked me that once she drops the children to school, can she use the top up travel card, to come back to the staton and pick up her bike to drive home.

AIBU to say no. I don't want to pay too much travel as it is!

Can't quite grasp it. Explain again. You pay her train fare to take the kids in the morning. How does she then get back from the school?

ConspiracyOfOne · 01/02/2021 23:19

I also read this 5 times and still don't understand

MaggieFS · 01/02/2021 23:22

Nope, I can't follow her movements either. Sorry OP!

Do you mean you don’t want to pay her fare to get back from the school to collect her bike or back to the school in the afternoon?

Do you pay her for the hours in between? What do you expect her to do during that time?!

intheshedyes · 01/02/2021 23:23

Ah! Sorry I'll explain again.

I give my nanny a prepaid Oyster card which I top up.

In the mornings she uses the Oyster card to drop my children to school. In the afternoon, she uses the oyster to bring my children home.

In the mornings, she drives her bike to our nearest station so she can pick up the DC's from my house and take them to school in the morning.

She asked me if she could use the oyster to go back to our nearest station to pick up her bike and ride home.

I don’t understand. Is she not needed again until the afternoon? But you don't want to pay for her to return to where she left her bike so she can ride home in the interim Confused

If that’s the case, that’s pretty tight of you.

intheshedyes · 01/02/2021 23:25

We pay her 10 hours a week at £14.00 he gross. It's more of an after school nanny role except she does morning drop offs.

Wait, so you pay for her to get the tube to take your kids to school but she is expected to pay her own way back? Is that right? It can't be...

DicklessWonder · 01/02/2021 23:26

You need to pay both ways, both times. It’s an absolute piss take otherwise. The costs are incurred directly as a result of her taking your children to school!

That's really tight of you.

Sparklfairy · 01/02/2021 23:27

So are you saying you only want to pay for two trips (taking to school in the morning, and home again in the afternoon) rather than four so she can get back in-between?

I'm so confused.

MaggieFS · 01/02/2021 23:27

OMG. It still makes no sense and you have the same indecipherable post in AIBU too!

If she parks the bike at the station how does she get to you? Perhaps explain it chronologically in terms of her movements? At the mo, I can't for the life of me work out what is going on, never mind give an opinion on it!

intheshedyes · 01/02/2021 23:27

She has been working for us for two days.

OP posts:
SmidgenofaPigeon · 01/02/2021 23:28

No, I’m a nanny and ANY travel expense that’s incurred by ferrying the children to where they need to go is met by my employers as it should be, it’s got nothing to do with how well I’m paid. So if she’s having to pay her own way back to get her bike after dropping the children off, that’s not on.

Soontobe60 · 01/02/2021 23:28

Open, I still don't understand! I think we need a route map!

user1477249785 · 01/02/2021 23:29

Your post doesn't make much sense. But bottom line is you have to pay for her to get to and from school morning and evening.

Comeonsummer1980 · 01/02/2021 23:29

Of course you need to pay for her to get back from the school. Are you just expecting her to hang about school till pick up?

DicklessWonder · 01/02/2021 23:30

1- Nanny rides to the station near OP’s house.
2- Collects children and takes them on the train to school - OP pays.^
3- comes back on train for bike - OP does not want to pay
4- gets train to school to collect children - OP does not want to pay
5- brings children back on train and stays for however long - OP pays

intheshedyes · 01/02/2021 23:30

Ah. Thanks for clarifying. I will pay... was confused how it would work out.

OP posts:
SmidgenofaPigeon · 01/02/2021 23:30

She shouldn’t even have had to ask you- I’d have just been using the Oyster card to get back from the school as it’s part of your expenses...

Southlandssue · 01/02/2021 23:31

What do you expect her to do in between dropping your kids and picking them up? Wait outside the school all day?

intheshedyes · 01/02/2021 23:32

This is my first time using a nanny, was a bit confused re. how the travel costs would work out.

OP posts:
Comeonsummer1980 · 01/02/2021 23:32

Oh OP you might want to ask for this thread to be taken down, your in for a roasting.

I tend to find that these posts aren’t true anyway

PegasusReturns · 01/02/2021 23:32

Of course you have to pay for her to get there and back morning and afternoon Confused

DeliaOwens · 01/02/2021 23:32

You should allow her to use top up travel card, to come back to the staton and pick up her bike. Her bike is only there because she is bringing your kids to school. The "but for" rule.

Is the a back story/drip feed here?
