Which Henry hoover?

Blackbird1234 · 01/02/2021 10:11

I'm in the market for a new hoover and having used my friends Henry hoover when I house sat for her, I think it's the route I'd like to go down. Problem is, I'm 26 and have only ever bought 1 other hoover (a wireless Rowenta) that I don't like, so I need some advice, please.

House is 2 floors, mainly tile floors and laminate. No pets, although I have quite long hair and my boyfriend has long very curly hair. We rent our house out in the summer and need something reliable and that will leave the house absolutely spotless.

  • Needs to have a lot of suction
  • Don't care about how heavy it is
  • Don't care whether it's with bag or without bag
  • No clue on budget, willing to spend a fair amount in order to get something good that'll last a long time

From what I can see online, the Henry Xtra seems to tick pretty much all of my boxes, but happy to be told otherwise if I'm wrong. I'd rather stay with Henry hoovers, but if anyone has a better recommendation then please do let me know.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the very boring question. :)

I have a Henry - waiting for it to conk out properly so I can replace it with a Miele. My OH has a Miele bought over 10 years ago and the suction is WAY better than on my 4 year old Henry.

The only reason I bought Henry was because it was the only vacuum cleaner still made in the UK - and my company make a part for it!

MegaClutterSlut · 01/02/2021 10:43

I have a henry, think its just the bog standard one and its crap. Suction isn't no where near as good as my dyson which is around 12 years old.

HugeAckmansWife · 01/02/2021 11:03

its a pain the arse - really awkward and heavy and takes up a lot of space to store. Suction isn't any better than any other I've had.

Ah, well none of that sounds promising hahaha. Aren't Mieles really expensive?
Dysons are out, I've heard far too many conflicting stories so don't feel comfortable buying one until I've properly tested one myself like I did with the Henry.

I have a Henry and Miele. Love the Henry, hate the Miele. Wish it was the other way round as the Miele cost a fuck tonne of £. The only good thing about the Miele is the suction and that it’s adjustable. Apart from that Henry wins everything.

willFOURbagsbeenough · 01/02/2021 13:27

Dysons are totally shite. Without fail every single one I’ve used (i’m a cleaner) has clogged as soon as it was pointed at a speck of dust.

RileyG73 · 01/02/2021 13:43

Got rid of ours after a month. We now have a shark, but my mums cordless Dyson is what I dream of 😂.
Shark is good but I just despise the wires

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 01/02/2021 14:04

I have a corded upright Shark (Liftaway). The suction is excellent and the cord is really long. I went for the corded as I heard the suction was better than cordless.

I find it quite heavy though. I'm in the market for a robot vacuum (one of the more expensive ones with mapping hence on the lookout for a deal!).

I'd like to swap to the robot plus a cordless stick vac for any hard to reach places.

Despite Henry trying to trip me up and push me down the stairs, he is the best.

We were given a new Dyson cordless, it's pants. We never reach for it despite convience/branding/expense.

Blackbird1234 · 02/02/2021 14:33

Thank you all for the responses, it appears I have some more research to do :)

@willFOURbagsbeenough and @TheFaithfulBorderBinliner, which Henrys do you have, please? The originals?

Red probably 12 years old. I remember getting the "commercial' one. I think it has an extra long power lead and aluminium tubes....I'm not planning on trading him in. The bags are relatively cheap and less hassle than the work Dyson.

enjoyingscience · 03/02/2021 20:35

Our red standard Henry is probably ten years old and fucking amazing. Never clogs, sucks up everything, takes a beating and no fannying about with buttons. He’s great.

We also have a g-tech chargeable thing that we use for little things, and it’s the worst. Clogs every two minutes, needs constant attention. Only good thing about it is that it collects a lot of hair on its spinning brush and I find it quite satisfying to take it off.

If you scroll down, there's a lot of explanation!

CodMouth · 03/02/2021 20:44

I love my Hetty. I got it about four years ago and the suction hasn’t wavered.

A side note....don’t accidentally suck up water like my dh did....it stinks so we bought a new pipe (£7) that fixed the issue.

sqirrelfriends · 03/02/2021 21:00

Miele every day of the week. Mines about 10 years old and is just brilliant, never had an issue with it.

amylou8 · 03/02/2021 21:11

Absolutely get a Henry. I refurbish second hand hoovers for work, I have a Henry at home. Dyson cylinders are reliable, the uprights are finickity. The handhelds are ok, but the batteries go. Gtechs I strip, they all break and everyone needs parts for them. Sharks are overpriced, the older lifts aways are good, but the brush bars always go. I never get Mieles, which probably means they're good and no one throws them out! Get a Henry 😁

Jody21 · 03/02/2021 21:11

I got the red Henry on the advice of my MIL who has had hers for years. It is shit! I have had to superglue some of the bits together as bits would fall apart every time I used it. It's also bigger and heavier than the meile I bought it to replace. I will be going back to meile when Henry packs in as my last one lasted about 5 years.

Marmite27 · 03/02/2021 21:15

I got a Henry from Costco, I think he’s a compact. I luffs him.

soundofsilence1 · 03/02/2021 21:37

Most cleaners and builders seem to use Henry's which should tell you something. I have never met a cleaner who used a Dyson.

truetuesdays · 03/02/2021 21:40

The stairs are horrendous with the Henry

We have a Henry (Harry to be precise-his green cousin) and it's a death wish cleaning the stairs

I do find him heavy and awkward to be honest and preferred the shark

Loads of people rave about Henry (including DH- who never hoovers Hmm) but honestly I don't get it

truetuesdays · 03/02/2021 21:42

@soundofsilence1 I have noticed that. I wonder if it's because construction dust fucks the filter on most hoovers?

amusedbush · 03/02/2021 21:55

I have a Hetty but I found that the standard flat attachment was really flimsy and would flip up off the carpet as I pushed and pulled it. I bought a cheap Amazon knock-off of the Airobrush turbo attachment and it has made a world of difference. It’s much more sturdy and cleans the carpets really well.

Blackbird1234 · 04/02/2021 13:14

Thank you everyone for the responses, this has been really helpful and I'm officially SOLD on getting a Henry and I now can't wait Grin
