Horlicks or Ovaltine?

I’m thinking of getting some vitamins into my diet- fruit veg obviously but thought of adding a drink like Horlicks or Ovaltine. Are they any good? Which one would you recommend? Or it it bettter to stick to a multivitamin tablet?

Ovaltine is lovely. Do the vitamins and Ovaltine. Treat yourself

VienneseWhirligig · 31/01/2021 22:58

I prefer Horlicks over Ovaltine, but can drink either.

Milo Smile

Ovaltine seems to be in the lead!
I haven’t seen Milo in the online grocery options- will check now

Does anyone else like to eat it straight out of the jar?

Itllpass · 31/01/2021 23:32

Horlicks Original seems to have palm oil-but has vitamin d

Wheat 41% (Wheat Flour and Malted Wheat), Malted Barley 31%, Dried Whey (Milk), Calcium Carbonate, Dried Skimmed Milk, Sugar, Palm Oil, Salt, Anti-Caking Agent (E551), Vitamin Mix (Vitamin C, Niacin, Vitamin E, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin B6, Riboflavin, Thiamin, Folic Acid, Biotin, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12), Ferric Pyrophosphate, Zinc Oxide

Ovaltine doesn’t have vitamin D and also doesn’t have palm oil which is good

Barley Malt Extract (73%), Milk Serum Concentrate, Fat-Reduced Cocoa Powder (8%), Minerals (Calcium, Magnesium, Iron, Zinc), Sugar, Rapeseed Oil, Vitamins (C, E, Niacin, A, Pantothenic Acid, B12, B6, B2, B1, Folic Acid, Biotin)

I preferred Horlicks, although I've not had either in about 30 years!
I'd no idea it was supposed to be good for you. I though it was just a bedtime drink.

Itllpass · 31/01/2021 23:36

Um just trying to get some vitamins in a less ‘boring’ way such as popping pills and these came to mind- although they don’t cover all essential vitamins

Yes, I do.
UnityUnited · 31/01/2021 23:38

I like both. People don’t seem to care as much these days about eating and drinking things to give them their vitamins. It’s a shame.

SadderThanEeyore · 31/01/2021 23:43

I prefer Horlicks but do like ovaltine too. Just recently bought a jar of horlicks for the first time in ages. Looking forward to adding it to my milk frother drinks!
Also recently discovered Bob milk which tastes like semi skimmed but is less calories etc so less guilt.

sandgrown · 31/01/2021 23:46

Ovaltine . I first had it when in hospital after having a baby and when we were not offered coffee in the evening . I love it now . My mum drank Horlicks in a special cup with a filled in handle !

Crapbuttrue · 31/01/2021 23:52

Anyone remember Horlicks tablets?

fairyannie · 31/01/2021 23:53

Horlicks - but I take vit C and vit D daily. Have done for at least 20 years since it was recommended by my endocrinologist.

RoseMartha · 31/01/2021 23:55

I prefer Ovaltine but the chocolate Horlicks is ok if I cant get the Ovaltine.
I dislike original Horlicks

RightOnTheEdge · 31/01/2021 23:56

I love Ovaltine, I'd never had it until I got some free sples in one of those Bounty pack when I was pregnant.
It's so relaxing.

I hate Horlicks it's pale and sickly.

This ^
I saw some on the shelf the other day and wondered whether to get any but was a bit put off by the price.
Now, I could justify it if it is giving a nice dose of Vit d along with the warm hugs Smile

Thank you for this thread! I'm pregnant at the moment and so many drinks are making me feel sick or fuelling the evil acid, but the thought of ovaltine & Horlicks has really cheered me up. I've added both of my shopping list, thanks 😊

I made Horlicks cupcakes once. They were delicious. If you have a coffee pod machine, you can get Horlicks pods on B&M, it makes it all frothy and rich.

Itllpass · 01/02/2021 01:14

No coffee machine- the jury is still out although the palm oil in Horlicks has put me off the vitamin d is an important factor- I need to decide by Tuesday as have the grocery delivery schedule for Wednesday

I preferred Horlicks but stopped taking it a few years ago because of its sugar content. I think they recommended 4 teaspoons in 200/250ml? of milk and the sugar content in that was the equivalent of something like 4-5 teaspoons ,so I stopped having it.

queenofarles · 01/02/2021 08:23

I think some European countries have stopped selling malt drinks and extracts because there is no proof they contain sufficient levels of vitamins

Last time I had Malt extract drink , I was about 7 years old! Our Nanny used to love drinking it and would make us have it with her. But i remember it used to be Ovo maltine back in the 80s ?

Horlicks reminds me of Chummy from Call the midwives Grin .

Itllpass · 01/02/2021 09:56

Yes the sugar level is quite high which is another worry.
