Help! The side of my face is slightly numb

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 13:16

Last night, the inside of my mouth on the left hand side went slightly numb. Not totally, like when you get an injection from the dentist, I could still feel. It started moving along, towards my jaw and then about an hour or two later it had migrated up to my eye socket. Nothing awful, to warrant a 999call, bit still slightly worrying. Facially I look fine, speech and eyesight isn't affected, can raise both hands etc so not a stroke.
This morning it's ever so slightly still there. The far left side of my face almost feels a little cold, like when the dentist injection is just about worn off.
I'll call the GP in the morning, but any advice? Or any idea what could be causing it?

Bell's palsy?

umpteennamechanges · 31/01/2021 13:20

It most likely might be Bell's Palsy but you should still go to A&E and they will check whether you have had a TIA. You may want this ruled out as there may be adjustments you need to make if you have suffered a TIA.

I had this back in September, GP sent me straight to A&E where it turned out to be shingles. A&E best advice all round.

um why would you not at least ring 111??? Confused

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 13:26

I'm currently on the phone to 111.

I’d be phoning 111 now. There’s a chance you might have had a minor stroke. And you do need to get checked out today. The GP will just send you to the hospital anyway.

BlueTimes · 31/01/2021 13:27

I would have called 111 last night and expected an ambulance or being told to go to A&E.

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 13:36

Its so very mild though, that's why I haven't called before now.

My son had something similar last year. Turned out to be a viral infection but always best to get it checked out. Hope you're OK x

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 13:44

Does numbness migrate with a TIA/ stroke? That's what's throwing me. Still currently on hold.

Can you smile?

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 13:45

Yes I can smile fine

I think 111 will tell you to go to A&E, and even possibly call an ambulance.

DD had Bell’s palsy, i rang 111 when it looked like she was having a relapse and I wasn’t sure what to do (weekend and GP was shut). They insisted on sending an ambulance, as it triggered something in the algorithm, even though i kept insisting it wasn’t necessary and I didn’t want one. Fortunately ambulance service rand me back directly to check whether i really needed an ambulance as they were busy, and I explained. But just to warn you 111 are likely to react massively

wellyjellymelly · 31/01/2021 13:46

Totally? Oh both sides?

Any facial drooping at all?

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 13:49

My smile looks normal on both sides. No drooping at all. My slightly numb cheek feels slightly swollen to me but looks fine in the mirror

I would still stay on and speak to 111.

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 13:51

I am still waiting. Been 29 min and counting.

They will tell you to go to A&E so I would go there and start the wait you will have there instead

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 14:53

They have just said a doctor will call me in the next few hours.

OP posts:
wellyjellymelly · 31/01/2021 18:52

What did they say?

ChippyDucks150 · 31/01/2021 20:47

I've been to out of hours, the doctor basically said he doesn't know, but suspects it will go away as quickly as it came on. He ruled out bells palsy or possible stroke. It does seem to be dying down a little so I hope it continues to do so. Obviously if it gets worse I've to go to a&e.

Glad you've been seen OP Flowers And glad too that there's been nothing found to worry about. Feel better soon.

How did he rule out a TIA/mini stroke without a scan? He simply can't have.
ChippyDucks150 · 01/02/2021 11:19

I had various silly things to do, with moving my tongue, squeezing my eyes shut etc, and said I wasn't presenting any other symptoms that would warrant further intervention. He said it sounded as though my nerve had been irritated somehow. The numbness has pretty much vanished by now, it's all very strange.
