Things teachers said to you as a child/teen...

That have stayed with you. Inspired by another thread, and it made me think of something a previous teacher said.

I was 16-17, re taking my maths GCSE at college and struggling as I don’t like maths. Parents evening rolled around, and the teacher said to my Mother that ‘I was not good enough for the class’ and she was looking at having me removed because I would ruin her stats. I left.

10 years later I re did my maths, went back to college, and now I’m training to be a midwife. A nice big fuck you 😄

The needlework teacher - not a massive thing but it was the way it was said: she said none of us would probably ever have anything made of silk (this was said looking down at the people in the class at a comprehensive in one of the poorest parts of the country). Well guess what - I am now a very high earner and yes I do know what silk is...

This thread is heartbreaking with all the vile things teachers have said Sad

I've got a lovely one to try and balance it. My favourite primary school teacher was leaving the school the same year I did. On the last day of term at the end of the day I went to her classroom to say goodbye - she gave me a massive hug and said "you can be anything you want to be". I wish I'd remembered it more when I was younger, but it comes back to me often now, especially when I'm nervous about something career-wise. It makes me stand taller. She was an amazing teacher.

I went and took exams to change schools to another private school (already went to a private school from reception age, so not a massive change). I was horrible at maths and I failed the maths entrance exam so badly that the HT said to me in front of my mum, she is so bad at maths that I've never seen anyone who scored this poorly ever even finish secondary school (I must have beem Y5 or 6 at the time?). I've remembered that my whole life. Actually, I didn't go to that school (they didn't offer me a place). I went to another, that was lovely. I finished school. I have a BSc, an MSc, and a Phd and I am a uni lecturer now. And much of my work involves mentoring students. I am thankfully good at what I do and not such a twat. I've often thought that I would send that HT a copy of my PhD certificate when I finally finished and tell him to fuck off. But he died a few years before I finished, which was a bit of a downer, because I would have really enjoyed that. I'm a scientist by the way, so obviously did perfectly well in maths and science after that. Smile

I was accused of copying maths work when I was 5 or 6.
I didn't need to copy. I could do it easily.
Ended up with a maths degree. Smile

Ripped up my essay in front of the class.

'A tree died for this sh*t'

Looking back he had a point 😀

Just thought of a few-
English teacher - dual entered me for O level and CSE English Language only after I kicked off. She said I had no chance of passing an O level, I got a B. She did at least apologise for underestimating me.
History- I had to do CSE, they wouldnt let me do O level but when we did mocks I got highest score in the year. Got a 1. She encouraged me to do A level and again apologised to me.
Maths - I really struggled and constantly put my hand up as I didnt understand. Told me I was an idiot that didn't listen. I was in second set out of 6 sets. I failed both O level and CSE. and so did most of my set. I took and passed GCSE in 2000.

My DS1 aged 7 - he isn't that bright, he doesnt get everything right, just needs to learn to behave. He got a scholarship to a top prep school 6 months later and another aged 14 to a senior school. went to shit after that buts another thread He is incredibly intelligent. When one teacher found out about his move from the first school she said to him 'so you think you are better than everyone else do you?'

I know teachers overall do a great job but as I said upthread this is why teacher assessments can be unfair and wrong.

Blimey, some of these are awful.

1st year infants, we were having a singing lesson with the other class, i liked singing lessons, my teacher was walking glaring at me and said nastily to the other teacher “this one never sings!” I never sang in class again until I auditioned for the choir in year 6 and got in.

At university I flunked my first year due to illness and restarted on a similar but different course. (This was back in the days when you could still get grants and fees were paid!). My so called mentor worked with students on both courses and basically told me I was wasting my time. I took great pleasure informing him of my results 4 years later.

"You ought to go to bed to sleep"

Said to me fairly regularly to great hilarity by male chemistry teacher in a class with mostly boys and only 3 girls. At the time I was probably a bit flattered that I was worthy of being portrayed as a bit racy. With todays values I'm Shock

My favourite teacher telling me she was disappointed in me.
I had to write some story thing down in one lesson. I had to give the name of a street. I thought of the street name of where my crush lived at the time.
The only problem was it had been graffitied (sp?). Riskin Road is was called. It had been changed to foreskin Road by teens.

I was pulled by my fave teacher to ask why I had done such an awful thing. Then I got told off for my confusion over the situation. Then I was accused of being a liar when I claimed that I did not know what foreskin meant, which I didnt at the time. She never explained to me what it was. She really went at me at how disgusted and disappointed she was.

I seen her years later. In fact, her kid went to my kids school. It took everything in me not to bring it up to her to tell her that I really didn't understand lol
