I submitted my tax return a few days ago and it’s only just updated this morning to show my balance so I can pay. But when I click on the payment options it says it could take three days for the money to reach HMRC! I won’t be fined will I?

Do a BACS transfer rather than set up a direct debit. Takes 3 minutes and they money moves nearly instantly.

ofwarren · 31/01/2021 10:24

It's been extended till the 28th February due to the pandemic

user13752257 · 31/01/2021 10:25

Late payment penalties don't start until a month after the due date. Small amount of interest at most.

Ah yes! Panic over! I was ready to pay days ago but it was showing as 0.

I thought deadline for submitting had been extended but tax due date had not? I.e., payment still due today?

xjox1983 · 31/01/2021 10:27

At most it's 2% interest for the year

user13752257 · 31/01/2021 10:27

That's the late filing penalty.

The late payment penalty was already a month after payment due date and has not been extended.

Deadline for submitting was not extended, they just waived late filing penalties for a month. If you file late it's still late for enquiry purposes. Late filing penalty is £100.

Payment due date hasn't changed. Late payment penalties do not begin until 1 month later - 5% penalty of tax due. Further penalties later if still unpaid.

Interest is charged from due date.

cheeseismydownfall · 31/01/2021 10:32

I haven't been able to file yet because I have twice requested an access code which they send by post and neither times has it arrived. Fuck. Does anyone know if I can make an estimated payment anyway or will I still be fined?

peachypetite · 31/01/2021 10:33

How do I know cumbernauld vs Shipley?

OP posts:
user13752257 · 31/01/2021 10:36

If you're not sure use Cumbernauld.

peachypetite · 31/01/2021 10:37

Yeh it says that but where would you actually find out?

Thanks @user13752257.

It doesn't matter, as long as your UTR is on the payment it will go to your account, and is credited as the day HMRC received it.

Sorry, meant to quote this.
user13752257 · 31/01/2021 10:45

Payslip if you'd been sent one.

Like pp says, it really doesn't matter as long as you use your UTR as the reference.

I read a post the other day that said it doent matter as long as you put your right reference

I assume you saw that late payment penalties don't start until your payment is one month late.

If you have your UTR to use as a reference you can make a payment. HMRC's bank details are on gov.uk website.

MadKittenWoman · 31/01/2021 14:30

As long as you register the payment today, it's fine. I received a confirmation about half-an-hour later this afternoon.

No no no, late filing penalties have a month's extension, late payment is unchanged

www.gov.uk/government/news/no-self-assessment-late-filing-penalty-for-those-who-file-online-by-28-february

Please only go by what is on the gov.uk website @cheeseismydownfall and make an estimated payment today

peak2021 · 31/01/2021 15:24

It's a weekend. Banks do not work weekends. Yet HMRC on their website do not reflect this in their guidance. Tax may be the only example where lack of prompt payment attracts interest or a penalty, so the impact of banks not working at weekends may not be apparent to everyone.

This year 31 January is on a Sunday. So why no 'please pay by 29 January unless...' message? It's not as if the date falling on a Sunday is unexpected, after all it was calculated in 1752.

MarshaBradyo · 31/01/2021 15:25

It was really fast by back transfer

I just chose the Cumb one

MarshaBradyo · 31/01/2021 15:27

Did you even read my posts? Hmm

Late payment penalties have always kicked in a month after the filing and payment due date. So they don't apply unless your tax is still unpaid at the end of February. As always.

Late payment and late filing are different things. The penalties for late payment and late filing are charged at different times and different amounts.
