Bitten by a baby rat! Do I need to do anything?

My cat brought a baby rat into the house in his teeth, and in trying to free it from him (the git) it bit me. Not an impressive wound, but it did bleed a fair bit at first. I've washed it with Dettol soap and put a plaster on it, but DH is freaking out that I'm going to get rat bite fever or something awful, and thinks I should get it checked out.

Anyone have any advice?

I clearly need to go to bed....I read the title as "baby bitten by rat" then read your cats name as "prick" and thought it was quite fitting BlushBlush

Glad you've been checked out and have your antibiotics. Please take what the medical staff told you seriously and really keep an eye on the bite.

I need to sleep too or put on my specs.i saw the photo and thought wtf has happened to her hand. Then opened the pic and it was the cat. In small version, tired and no glasses in it looked like a deformed hand

I got bit several times trying to “rescue” a baby rat that screaming at my two cats from behind an old pallet. Now 1) I’m allergic to rats, 2) couldn’t stand the screaming so had to get it away. I ended up flinging my hand out to try to get it’s teeth out of my hand & it sailed over the fence.
I ended up in A&E, having had two piriton, areas cleaned & dressed, told to contact them if I felt unwell or my hand swelled or a redline tracked up my arm. No thanks from Ratty for saving it’s life!

@sadpapercourtesan

You need to tel your hospital,to have a important tenanus Jab injection as soon as possible to protect yourself from weals Disease that rats have on them from being amongst sewers etc.

Its a very bad bacteria,

any bites that break the skin, human or animal, need to go to hosp.
people often underestimate the danger of soft tissue damage/ infection.
things can take off really quickly. and seriously.
i've seen it at first-hand, excuse pun. and that was a leg. patient was lucky to still have her leg, saved in the nth hour by prof plastic surgery who recognised it as nec fasc; she was v close to losing her life, let alone leg.
i didn't realise all this when i was younger. now older and wiser. please everybody, taken no chances, ever.

I was bit by our cat years ago and had to get a tetanus. Was the baby rat okay? Sorry you tried to do a good deed and ended up getting bit, ring 111 and get advice.

Changelingss · 31/01/2021 02:57

Sorry just read that you got a tetanus, glad you’re sorted.
