Volunteer doula

Hi

I recently qualified as a doula but , obviously, with covid , actually putting this into practice has been compromised.

I trained with the aim to offer my services in a voluntary capacity.

When I started the training I was in a job that would have allowed me the freedom to attend a birth , but following redundancy and a change in role this is not longer possible.

I could assist a couple / woman in formulating a birth plan / information / guidance etc over several meeting but might not be able to attend the birth ( covid not withstanding )

How might I make contact with those who might need support ?

If you work in a maternity unit / with pregnant women how / who should I approach .

I already volunteer at my local hospital so i am a "known" face as it were .

If you wanted extra support during your pregnancy what would make you feel comfortable to approach someone like me to assist you ? Referral via the hospital ???

Would a leaflet in the antenatal waiting room be a point of contact ?

Many thanks

Hi Kitty

Have you signed up with Doulas Without Borders? You can apply here:

Most doulas have a website and then I also searched Doula UK. Making yourself known to the midwife team and to people who provide birth related services (pregnancy yoga, etc). I would also let other local doulas know (including whoever trained you). They may have someone they could refer to you if they are able to work with them.

That said, I would think about charging something, maybe on a sliding scale. There will be some people who need the free support but others will be suspicious that there’s a catch.
