I live in thetford Norfolk with my three children, been looking to exchange for a while now. I’m going through some relationship issues with my partner of 13 years and it could well be ending very soon so I’m looking for a fresh start with my kids and this one come up. Anyway long story short... what is haverhill Suffolk like? Schools? Area? Not sure of exact area but the lady said she’s a 10 minute walk from home bargains if that helps... lol. Any information will be great :) thankyou

Haverhill is a bit run down and scruffy, but at least has a high street and amenities. Bug Sainsbury's, Homebase etc. Cinema, leisure centre, food outlets are all good. Decent access to Cambridge by car or bus. It's not on a train line though.

I think schools are ok, some people choose the schools in Linton, especially for secondary.

Linton? Is that far? I don’t drive so will need things to be somewhat walking distance really. Schools are a big thing for me really as don’t want to move there and my kids don’t thrive like they need.

Thetford has its areas of being run down and scruffy too so it’s normal I think. It’s good it has all amenities close by also, she did mention shops are nearby and home bargains which is where I currently work in thetford.

Schools in Haverhill seem fine. There a number of primaries, all of whom seem to have a good reputation. The two secondary schools are part of the Unity Trust. My child goes to Samuel Ward Academy and I have been very happy with it. My child could walk to either secondary school from our house and enjoys going.

Aww that’s amazing to see a positive post :) one of mine will be in year 5 and the older two are year 8 and 10. I think as long as my children can go to a good school and there is amenities close by then I’m not to concerned about the surroundings so much. I would hope it’s not as bad as people are making out though :/

We find Haverhill a nice and friendly place to live. Usually there is quite a lot going on with events in the market square in the summer and quite a lively Arts Centre with a lot of productions and shows.

Awesome that’s good to hear :) it’s what you make it at the end of the day I guess. Thankyou for your comment :)

Linton is a few miles, it's on a decent bus route. Linton Village College for secondary is amazing!

XMummyof3 · 30/01/2021 23:14

Thankyou for that :) I’ll bare that in mind for sure

I live out of town but my children go to school in Haverhill and were doing fine prior to COVID. No bullying and doing fine in lessons. Can’t comment on how it is to live in town but it is one of my nearest towns and often do shopping there. There are buses to Bury and Cambridge for bigger shopping towns.

we all love it here! The town has a stigma attached to it for some reason going back years but honestly, it’s a lovely town.
Everything is pretty much within walking distance/local bus route.
Two secondary schools which are both great, my children attend one and youngest goes to local primary.
Tesco/Sainsbury’s/Aldi/lidl/home bargains/B&Q all within the town. Cinema and sports centre/swimming pool.
There’s a great community spirit in Haverhill, join some of the local Facebook pages to get an idea and also join the ‘disco kitchen’ page, that will give you an idea of how the community comes together.
Some petty crime as to be expected as you get that anywhere.
Regular buses to Cambridge and Bury and lots of other local areas, just no train line.
Lots of lovely open green spaces and parks, local bmx track and also a skate park.
Honestly, it’s a fab place to live Smile

Awww thankyou so so much for your comment, that actually really does put my mind at ease it may only be one comment from one person but it helps, Think every place has its problems and thetford is known for its bad points so I try not to let it bother me. Would be good to travel back and forward to thetford every once in a while to come see friends and family but a fresh start is needed.
