Nhs workers help me schedule something

I'm going to be offering classes in a stress reduction technique that I think will be really useful for key workers . (Easy to learn, easy to do at home, no ongoing cost)

What time of day or days of the week would suit you to do an online 90minute class?

The problem with these kind of things is there is no set time that is convenient. I am a nurse, I work 13hr day shifts and 12hr night shifts any day of the week, so that is an unanswerable question. Many of us don’t have set days off, and the shifts can change at short notice to cover sickness etc.

Harmarsuperstar · 29/01/2021 12:43

As the pp has said, nurses don't usually work set days or shifts 🤷‍♀️

pinkphone · 29/01/2021 12:46

There is no set time that would be most convenient. My shifts could be any time 24/7!

The best thing is to offer classes at a range of times and let people pick one.

If it's a series of classes - no hope, I couldn't commit to that as my shifts change regularly.

nhsworkershelpmeout · 31/01/2021 07:34

Are there no general shift start and end times?

OP posts:
dudsville · 31/01/2021 07:37

Start and end times are the worst time for this to much else to do in handover and end of shift tasks.

Cyclingforcake · 31/01/2021 07:37

No. Every shift pattern in every ward is different. Different professions will be on different shift patterns.
Has a hospital asked you to do this or is it something you think will be useful? Because quite honestly I can’t think of anything more stressful than paying for a series of stress reduction classes and then not being able to access a lot of them due to work. And an awful lot of hospital are offering this stuff in house at the moment on a drop in basis.

Love2cycle · 31/01/2021 07:42

Im not an NHS worker but i am a keyworker. Our company offered sonetjung similar which we could access as and when convenient.
It was a lovely gesture but to be honest it just felt like one more thing added to my to do list, so i didnt attend.

nhsworkershelpmeout · 31/01/2021 07:44

It's not a series it's something you can learn once and use yourself. Body focused intervention. Not being coy just don't want to be accused of touting for business. It's been used a lot in traumatised communities like natural disasters and war zones because doesn't require talking things over, so time and money efficient. Basically works to reset nervous system from body upwards.
Simply wanting to offer something low cost that really works and is easy to do with no long term commitment. Getting the impression of resistance though.

A lot of shifts seem to end at 7 or maybe 8pm, so you'd need a late session for people to be able to go. But then the problem with that is that if they're on an early shift the next day then they won't want to be up late, and generally after work people are tired and want to wind down anyway.

If you want to stay before work then you'd have to offer really early like 4am so that there's time to do the session then get to work which probably starts at 7am.

Night shift workers will be starting at 7pm ish and finishing at 7am so you'll have the same but opposite problems there.

Then there are other shifts which might be things like 2pm-10pm or 6am-2pm or whatever.

dudsville · 31/01/2021 07:57

All the services I know are already being supported for free by their local mental health services.

nhsworkershelpmeout · 31/01/2021 07:57

Thanks to all for your input and taking a minute to reply. And thanks for all you do at work.

Could you pre record so that people can look at it at a time suitable to them?
I’m a nhs nurse and start and finish time vary on my floor in my hospital let alone nationally.
I do my exercise online but if I can’t join the live sessions I just catch up when I can and they are saved. It also means I can revisit a session if I need to.
It’s a great idea - I’d certainly be interested.

Livedandlearned · 31/01/2021 08:06

Pre record is a great idea

exitlight · 31/01/2021 08:34

90 minutes is a long time, could you shorten it at all? Or split it into two?

badlydrawnbear · 31/01/2021 09:01

@nhsworkershelpmeout

Are there no general shift start and end times?
We have set start and end times on my ward, but we don't have a spare 90 minutes at the start and most of us never actually leave at the time the shift finishes. I consider it a good day if I have left by 9pm from a shift that ends at 8.30pm. Also, after 13hrs people are not going to want to stay for a 90 minute session however valuable they might think it would be to them, they are going to prioritise going home, seeing their family, eating and drinking (we have 1 break which for some people will have been 8 hours before the end of the shift), sleeping etc. I am sorry you feel we are resistant, I do think what are proposing sounds good, but we are just pointing out the realities of the shifts. I do agree with others that it would be good if you could record it and people could watch it at their convenience. There have been various wellbeing/ mental health focused apps and information directed at us over the past year, and some of them I have looked at at home when I can fit it in around family life and home school etc, things that have to be at a set time like zoom sessions have not been possible to do. Thank you for wanting to share this information/ skill with us. I hope our feedback helps you to find a way to do this.

My Dsis trust are offering these for free
10-15 minute sessions.
I should imagine most are offering this for free currently as part of their staff well being programmes.
