What veg on weekly shop?

Sosigsandwich · 29/01/2021 11:09

I feel like just buy the same veg every week though try to make a variety of different things.
We get; Peppers, courgettes, butternut squash, aubergine, leeks, mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, sweet pots (do they count?!) and cauliflower.

I know it's a decent variety but feels very samey. Anyone got any suggestions of different veg or less known combinations to mix things up a bit?

Thank you !

What about Savoy cabbage?
Or kale.. whole kale is much nicer than the bags of chopped kale because you can cut the tough stalks out before you chop the leaves.

Frozen spinach is very versatile

Green beans are nice. But are flown a long way to get here this time of year!!

We buy Peppers, leeks, mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower from your list. Also buy babycorn and cabbage.
And then frozen peas and Aunt Bessies carrot and swede mash.

Cabbage? You could work your through all the white, red, and green leafy types. Also Swiss chard, kale, pak choi, beetroot, romanesco, corn on the cob. You don't mention much in the way of salad veg - lettuce, rocket, tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes. Also things like chillies, root ginger, turmeric root that you can add in to stews and casseroles. And peas, beans (green beans, broad beans, borlotti beans etc), and pulses like lentils and chick peas would give more variety too.

Being vegetarian I like to eat a good variety of veg but nearly all of the veg I was buying would go off before I ate it so now I buy nearly all frozen and store it in my chest freezer so I have different veg every day.
I might get the odd non frozen veg like green leafy veg, onions and potatoes but there is so much less waste now and more variety.

We clearly have similar taste in veg OP! The veg you list are my staples too (except aubergine which I just don’t like.) Along with red onions which go in things, roasted or stuffed and baked.
I also eat a lot of salads to always have different lettuces or leaves, celery, spring onions.
Also stir fries so bean sprouts and always have tins of water chestnuts and bamboo shoots.
Love beetroot in any form.
Always have tinned sweetcorn in the cupboard and a bag of petit pois in the freezer. And always a jar of pickled gherkins!

I sometimes use spring greens, pak choi fennel all finely chopped and stir fried with a bit of soy sauce and a sprinkle of chilli flakes as a side.
Baby corn, sugar snaps and mange tout have recently made an appearance as has fresh beetroot, made a lovely beetroot risotto yesterday. Also buying sprouts and swede. Started my healthy eating kick nearly 3 weeks ago so its allgetting used and anything that doesnt will go in a soup. 😀

Celeriac, red onion, garlic, fennel, peas, artichoke, red cabbage.

mindutopia · 29/01/2021 14:04

We get more green veg- french beans, broccoli, kale, Savoy cabbage (sautéed with garlic and butter is lovely, it’s my 7 year olds favourite thing!), also lots of raw veg for snacking, cucumber, carrots, peppers, baby tomatoes.

I tend to look at what’s in season to give me a prod to change up the veg I buy. Celeriac, celery, kale, parsnips, swede, sprouts and shallots are in season at the moment so they’re good and at their cheapest.
