What’s Going on in Scotland-SNP

Just watching the news about the conspiracy against Salmon. Sturgeon seems hell bent on another referendum and wants to publish sensitive data about vaccines.

Are the SNP just about independence above all else? Do Scottish people like her/them. I have no horse in the race and I love visiting Scotland and know/work with Scottish people in England. Just ignorant and curious.

Yes SNP are all about independence. Sickening is what it is.

Sarahandduck18 · 29/01/2021 09:33

If you look at several recent polls the majority of the Scottish population want independence. NS is doing her job of representing the majority of the population and her party.

The Alex Salmond situation is a mess and I dont think the truth will ever be clear.

The SNP are the party of government in Scotland so they do have policies other than independence.

The polls show they are very popular and will win the election coming up in May.

Of course there is a large minority who loathe the SNP/NS/AS/all supporters of a referendum and I dependence. Go look on Scotsnet- plenty always out in force there. It gets even nastier than the Brexit debates on the rest of MN.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/01/2021 09:35

The last twenty polls have shown majority support for independence.

The SNP are in a mess. There's something very dodgy about the whole Salmond affair which has split the party, the party is also split over the issue of women's rights.

Yes they are only about independence, to the detriment of health and education.

They are also masters of spin, and many people fall for the image they portray. No doubt some posters will be along soon to prove my point.

I am English, have distant relatives in Scotland, and my opinion for a long time has been supportive of Scottish independence. When I visit I see a separate culture, know there is a separate mostly better legal system and a different education system.

The Alex Salmond issue is not an easy one to predict what the outcome will be. He was found not guilty in court so the only issue now is how the allegations were handled by Nicola Sturgeon as First Minister given many were made by Scottish Executive staff.

My opinion is that the best argument against Scottish independence is the SNP itself. Their record in government in Scotland is poor, there are some poor ministers, and their decision to create one police force I disagree with. They do not appear to be protecting women in their plans to reform laws about gender assignment. There are many examples of political parties campaigning for independence through recent history shown to be useless or corrupt once that independence is granted.

Crookairroad · 29/01/2021 10:07

I’d love to know who they ask in these polls. They certainly haven’t asked me, nor have any of my friends or work colleagues. I have zero interest in independence. NS and the SNP do not speak for me. She’s an utter shambles.

NoCauseRebel · 29/01/2021 10:11

Well, I can see NS’s popularity dropping somewhat now that she’s put Europe ahead of her own citizens and is prepared to sell out on vaccine data. Good luck with that one.

Of the Scottish people I know many want independence one day but most do not want it right now as they just do not have the resources to manage it.

derxa · 29/01/2021 10:15

The SNP do not speak for me and I'm an extremely proud Scot.

Sarahandduck18 Except they made a personal promise that it was a once in a generation vote. They had it, they voted no, that’s it. They can’t then do it again a few years later.

Bluebird1234 · 29/01/2021 10:35

The SNP are about independence above all else. They are unchallenged by the Scottish media due to their vociferous online supporters. The education system is appalling, the Scottish NHS is in a much worse state than England, it is the highest taxed part of the U.K. and drugs deaths are the highest in Europe.

Sturgeon is concentrating on Independence to divert attention from other areas especially Salmond. The last thing Scotland needs in continued uncertainty of yet another independence referendum. Sturgeon criticised Trump for ignoring the election results but does not see the irony that she tries to ignore that Scotland voted no to independence in the last referendum.

Also if Brexit is bad Scexit from the U.K. would be ten times as damaging and impacting.

Sarahandduck18 · 29/01/2021 13:05

Threads like this are why there’s a current thread on Scotsnet about why pro independence supporters don’t post there.

If the best argument for the union is that ‘once in a generation’ comment by AS (not NS) and not by the wider independence movement then you know it’s a fait accompli.

Scottish education is overall better than the English system. Ask people who have knowledge and experience of both.
-flexibility over starting age
-not pushing just turned 4 year olds to sit at a desk all day with a pencil in hand
-more years of a broader primary education
-smaller class sizes
-fewer private schools creaming off the rich kids
-no grammar schools/secondary moderns
-no church run state schools
-no academies
-clear catchment areas with high certainty over places
-no bidding over school places
-guarantee of local school
-broader curriculum until a later stage
-flexibility over university starting age
-free university
-more flexible uniform policies
-no fines for term time holidays
-flexibility of course level in upper years
-all teachers are qualified

But even despite all this independence is not about the SNP’s devolved policies.

Should unionism be determined by the Westminster Tory’s policies?
