Would you pay for June school trip?

Dd is in year 6, every year they have a week residential at PGL. Normally in September, so would have been in Sept 2020.
We paid £30 deposit back in December 2019 with the balance to be paid by June 2020.
Obviously everything went on hold and school said not to worry, then that we should pay by December 2020 as it had been moved to March 2021, and now it has been moved to June 2021.
This week we had a message to continue paying for the trip if we haven’t already paid in full. I know some parents have paid it all.
I haven’t paid anything beyond the deposit but have the money to pay the balance in full with no notice if required.
I have no faith at all that the trip will happen and know from friends involved in Girlguiding that there have been massive issues with PGL and refunds. I don’t want school to end up out of pocket but also feel that if money has already changed hands, it’s going to be nigh on impossible to get it back.
I’m also not entirely comfortable with dd going on the trip even if it is ‘permitted’, she’s barely left the house or garden for the best part of a year now. I can’t see there being any scope for rearranging the trip again, given they leave the school in July.
I have emailed school to ask what the situation is and explaining that I am able to pay, but don’t think it’s a sensible move.
I am ok with losing the deposit but not the whole amount, but given the request to pay more, would you do it?

No

McCorona · 28/01/2021 19:47

Yes, I probly would, but i would check with the school about their insurance arrangements first. I agree that there is almost no chance of it going ahead, sadly.

StroppyTop · 28/01/2021 19:48

I wouldn’t just yet. Way too early to tell if it can go ahead. Awful uncertainty but also awful to lose money.

If restrictions are lifted by then there will be so many great things you can do with your dd instead.

I've got a similar problem.
Dc in year 6, residential booked for June. We pay in installments, paid the first 2 and the third is due beginning of Feb. Can't see it going ahead but we're expected to pay. Hope we get it back when it is cancelled.

Y6s missing their leaving celebrations was one of the things I saddest about last year. Haven’t even got a y6 child at the moment! Really hope your dd can have a good send off.

I've paid for my Y7s rearranged residential in July today. I think it might go ahead, but we have been reassured that we will be refunded in full if it can't happen.

I would want written confirmation, legally binding, that the money will be refunded if the trip is cancelled. Whether or not the school gets anything they spent returned.

Exactly as I would want if I was booking a holiday myself.

MoiraNotRuby · 28/01/2021 19:54

I'm still owed half the money for a cancelled (not PGL) residential from last summer - I'm not paying for anything else.

As an aside PGL family holidays are brilliant - worth going with a few friends one half term if you can in future, if there are families with parents and kids you all like.

No, I wouldn't.

Lots of issues getting refunds from PGL & other similar venues last year when it was out of everyone's hands.

My ds's yr 6 residential is usually in May. We were told back in September it wouldn't be going ahead this year. His yr 5 one was cancelled last May, but we all got refunded in full, took a few months to get back though. Although this was just at a nearby activity centre, and was refunded through the schools insurance.
