I'm 54, at my age my parents had 6 grandchildren, both working and I'd be 21.

I'm 40. My parents were 35 when they adopted me, so mum would have been a SAHM still, and dad would have been working.

My birth mother was 18 when she had me and gave me up. By the time she was 40 she'd had all three of my half-brothers!

I'm 60. My parents seemed to enjoy themselves well enough, going on holiday etc. My in laws were the same. Both dads were working of course.

Mum was free of kids. All grown and flown. She was 3 years clear after breast cancer. Living with 2nd husband happily and enjoying foreign holidays. No money worries for the first time in forever. That was about to change though.

I'm 51, with 3 kids - 14, 13 and 10. At 51 my mum had just moved in with her boyfriend and was at college. I was also at college (I was 24) and my older sister was working in London. I have no idea what my dad was doing.

I'm 56. At that age my DF had been retired for 2 years (because it was on offer with a good package). My DM was a SAHM anyway. They did very little with their retirement - I don't intend to do the same.

At my age (43), my parents had a 20 year-old, an 18-year-old and a 15-year old Shock (I have a 9 year old and 12 year old). They'd been married 21 years and we've been married 13.5 years.

My dad had had a successful business he ran with his dad that had recently gone bust in the crappy economy of the early 90s when their competitors moved their production to the Far East and undercut them. My mum had also had a small business in her 30s, but had wound it up by that age.

They were looking to downsize to a smaller house to save money around this age, but (I realised in retrospect this had happened) my grandparents bailed them out by downsizing from their home, so we stayed.

I’m 37, with teenage daughters (16&13)

My 18 year old sister made my mom a Nan just as she turned 37, my brother was 15 & I was 14.

This is a really interesting thread.

I'm 40
Mum shocked the family when she had me 15 years after having my siblings

I'm 62 - my parents had retired at 60, moved to a beautiful part of the country & lived very happily and comfortably - lots of lovely holidays, theatre trips, spending time with friends, volunteering... a lovely life style for 20+ years. Fortunately they are both still here (88 & 90) but have downsized to live nearer to me.

DH & I still working & no chance of retiring for a few years!
