Prime Minister's job

What does he actually do? All I see of him is news features where he travels to different parts of the country and has a photo taken in a work-place wearing the appropriate clothing. Today he was in Scotland wearing a lab coat.

He works around the clock. How can you even ask this?

Starring in staged photo opportunities is a big part of brand Boris.

Most PMs work around the clock, make no mistake Boris does not. He's famously work shy

peak2021 · 28/01/2021 18:55

The only thing he has ever put any real effort into is in the bedroom, usually not with his wife or fiancee.

Most of the PM’s working day is spent in ‘meetings with ministerial colleagues and others’, as he says at PMQs every week.

Then, when the working day is done, he has to work his way through his ‘Red Boxes’, as do all ministers. These are boxes of papers prepared for him by the civil service. They all require a decision, a signature or both. He can also send them back to his officials for more work if he isn’t happy with what he is asked to decide or approve. He also has to do red boxes at weekends, like all ministers.

Whatever you think of Johnson, being PM isn’t a part-time job.

Boris seems to go anywhere that he can wear an outfit, he loves a lab coat or a hi-vis & hard hat. Other than dressing up I’m not quite sure what he’s doing.

How exactly do you know he doesn't work around the clock? You really have no idea at all do you?

I would wager he is probably the busiest Prime Minister we have had in recent history.

Blessex · 28/01/2021 19:30

@bobbieflekman ah you know him. You know that.

Blessex · 28/01/2021 19:31

@bobbieflekman would love you to do his job for a week

BlueTimes · 28/01/2021 19:32

Do you mean what do prime minister in general do, as part of their job description, or do you specifically just want to have a go at Johnson? There is a huge difference.

eddiemairswife · 28/01/2021 20:17

What do they do in general? The present PM seems to spend a lot of time travelling around, whether by car, train or air I don't know, but there doesn't appear to be much time for serious meetings in between. Or is his role to be a figurehead while other people do the donkey-work?

Is this a wind up??

NovemberR · 28/01/2021 20:21

Yep. Not a fan of Tommy Sheridan in any way, but it did make me laugh when he pointed out it was hardly vital for Boris to go to Scotland today, considering he kept waffling on about essential journeys only.

I believe the phrase was He can patronise us just as well from his office in Whitehall...

soundofsilence1 · 28/01/2021 20:23

Can't you ask your husband?

The buck should stop with him. As PP have said, he will get a box every day of all the decisions that can’t be taken at a lower level of government - so in current days I’d expect things like, the gap between the vaccines, whether people told to isolate should get 500 quid, that sort of thing. He’s also supposed to defend his Government’s decisions and track record at PMQs but Boris isn’t very good at that - in the “old days” it was a test of wits, the PM doesn’t know what the MPs are going to ask so he would spend the morning getting briefed on all the current issues so he (or she!) was ready with comebacks, facts and figures. If you get the chance to see any old footage of Mrs T doing PMQs you’ll see how it should be done!

Travelling round and doing the PR stunts - yes, part of the job but Boris does seem a bit too keen on them. IMO.

Whatdoyoudowhendemocracyfails · 28/01/2021 20:26

He also briefs the Queen once a week on what her Government is up to.
