Average is between 3-4ooml for a female. I once had retention after a birth and had an estimated 900ml. It was agony. I was fitted with a catheter to drain and help retrain it.

The maximum capacity of the female bladder is 800ml approximately male bladder 1 litre if I recall correctly from biology. But as you usually drink before an ultrasound scan that's not abnormal, I never know how much to drink so was full to bursting!

@Embroideredstars i was presuming the scan was to investigate the bladder retention? That's what happened when I had it, so no drinking for the scan just the procedure to assess the degree of retention.

Yes - if someone was in retention we would catheterise over 500ml

Just make sure if they do catheterize that you have the appropriate catheter. I was sent away for a week wearing one suitable for 24 hours (much harder and more rigid). By the next day I couldn't walk and was pissing blood from where it was rubbing internally. Stupid midwife hadn't had the right training apparently. Such fun with a newborn.
