Air fryer chips Vs chip pan chips

Aside from the obvious, ie chip pans are dangerous and unhealthy, which do you think is best?
I absolutely adore propper chip pan chips, though they are a rare treat.
Friend tells me her air fryer makes chips taste just like chip pan chips, but healthier. I'm not sure it's possible.
I've never used an air fryer but I'm tempted to get one if it's as good as she says.
Is it worth it? Or is it a gimmick?
Opinions please?

not sure about the healthier, but the chips out of an air fryer are very tasty. and it's a lot safer to use than a chip pan for sure.

air fryer is a bit of a misleading term imo. it still uses a considerable amount of fat/oil.

air fryer chips do taste slightly different to chip pan chips but they are still very tasty its a case of getting the oil amount and timing right but after my ex set fire to a kitchen with a chip pan there is no way one would be allowed in my house ever again the air fryer is safer and easy to clean

How different are air-fried chips to oven chips from the freezer? Nice, fat oven chips made with just potatoes and sunflower oil - none of this 'Homestyle' crispy coating nonsense.

See at the moment I use the chip pan very occasionally and give it my full attention. The rest of the time I use the oven and make them like I do roast potatoes.
I'm tempted but have my reservations.
Shame I can't call round friends house to try some.

My air fryer will turn potatoes into lovely chips with a very small amount of oil. So much healthier than frying. To me they are just as good as a chip pan, plus no oily smells hanging around or the dangerous either.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 26/01/2021 16:36

I dont use any fat in my air fryer!!! Maybe not exactly the same as a deep fat fryer, but definitely not different enough that youd care.

And Jacket potatoes are just gorgeous in it too

MrsDThomas · 26/01/2021 16:44

Chip pans are only unsafe if you don’t watch it. I love mine!

Phyllidakettle · 26/01/2021 16:48

Why not buy a deep fat fryer? I use one for chips and they are lovely. Deep fryers are much safer to use than a chip pan

TomorrowsPrincess · 26/01/2021 16:55

I love 💕 chip pan chips!!!
Since I moved in with my partner 7 years ago, I got rid of my deep fat fryer and got an air fryer.
The chips do taste nice but I miss my fryer!
You cannot beat deep fried chips! No air fryer will make chips taste like they are deep fat fried...... I'm on a diet at the moment..... maybe when I get to my goal, I will treat myself to a deep fat fryer 😁😁😁

Gobbeldegook · 26/01/2021 16:59

I used to have a deep fat fryer but used it so rarely it was a waste of space.
Does anyone have a brand recommendation for an air fryer?

Our tower air fryer is fab

Hazelnutlatteplease · 26/01/2021 18:08

Get a bigger one than you think you need!! Based on the reviews I thought I needed a 1.5-2l one. The one I "accidentally" got in the sale was a 4.3l. It's perfect size

I’ve only ever used frozen oven chips in my air fryer, how do people cook their air fried ‘proper’ chips?

SantaMonicaPier · 26/01/2021 18:26

Air fryer chips are fab. I have a Ninja Foodi which is also a pressure cooker, I love it.

nixso29 · 26/01/2021 18:27

I have the Tefal 2-in-1, one tbsp of rapeseed oil is all thats needed to make chips just like deep fat fryer ones

HighHeelBoots · 26/01/2021 18:31

I've just bought an instant pot vortex. It was on offer but has just gone back to full price
It is amazing. Chips are fab. Bacon is crispy. I roasted a chicken in it. Quick, juicy and with crispy skin
I put off getting one but I love it

Singlenotsingle · 26/01/2021 18:39

I might have to look at buying one. Oven chips are so easy though.

JovialNickname · 26/01/2021 19:00

You can put frozen chips in the air fryer and they come out really nice, like chip shop chips (kebab/burger type chip shop)

We’ve tried loads, both the paddle and the ones with the baskets (DH is obsessed with trying out kitchen gadgets). I think it depends what you’re planning on cooking in it. The basket ones are good for onion rings etc but not much good for chips. With the three we’ve had, the instructions said to parboil the potatoes before chipping them, which seemed to defeat the object. Plus you have to keep shaking the basket.

We’re now on our second Tefal one with the paddle that goes around and will buy another when this one eventually goes. We use it mostly for chips which are really nice and you can also do frozen chips in them if you’re feeling a bit lazy. They definitely taste better than when done in the oven. If you take the paddle out of the middle, you can also use it for things like onion rings (the coating tends to come off if you leave the paddle in).

Being honest, a air fried chip is nothing like a proper fried chip and you might be disappointed if that’s the taste you’re after. But they’re really nice, they use hardly any fat, you don’t get any odours and you don’t have a load of cooking fat to dispose of.

Foobydoo · 26/01/2021 19:31

I'd say oven chips are 2/10 air fryer chips 7/10 deep fried chips 10/10.
Making proper chips in the airfryer can be a bit of a faff. I find some are under and some over cooked and some end up broken but I am guilty of overloading the basket. They are not as good as 'proper' chips.
They are still nice though. Oven chips cook in 10 to 15mins and come out crispy.
I love my airfryer and use it lots for cooking, chicken strips, sausages, baked potatoes, reheating. You can even bake with them but I haven't tried.

Just peel and chip a potato p(s), add the recommended amount of oil (ours came with a measuring spoon) and put them on for 20ish minutes. I never bother with oil if we’re doing frozen; I think they’re already coated in it, but the ‘real’ chips definitely need it.

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 26/01/2021 20:02

Thanks Sn0t, I’ll give them a go. Can’t really beat proper fried chips though, i just don’t have room for a deep fat fryer as well as my Ninja grill and Ninja Foodie, and Ninja processor 😊. Damn Ninja and their interest free payment plans...

minty133 · 26/01/2021 20:07

How do you do a jacket potato in an air fryer, and how long do they take to cook?
