Question about recovering from appendectomy

My DS1 (12) had his appendix out 6 days ago. It had ruptured but not completely burst. The operation was routine & successful & he came home the next day. It was keyhole surgery.

He is now recovering nicely, went for a slow 5 minute walk today, doing well. He is on antibiotics which will last another 2 days. However, one thing I'm not sure about is that he is saying it hurts when he wees - in the abdomen rather than anywhere else. He is not weeing more or less than usual & it is normal colour & smell, no blood etc. Is this to be expected please? I'm not sure whether I need to be concerned.

Ds (13yo) had his out in June. His wasn't keyhole surgery as they weren't doing that due to covid, and it was fairly complicated (appendix in the wrong place twisted round-he was down in surgery for about 4.5hours)

He didn't have any problem weeing afterwards, so I would phone the ward/GP and ask.

Thanks Witchend

I am a surgeon. That is concerning. Sometimes this can be a sign that there is remaining pelvic infection. It’s worth getting checked out - some blood tests to look at the markers of Infection at least.

I had mine out via keyhole 12 years ago and I didn't have that kind of pain afterwards, I think it's best to check it out.

Had mine out in March under key hole. I had no pain when passing urine, please do get him checked. Hope he recovers well.

Thanks all. He is fast asleep now, so I will see if he is still saying the same in the morning & if so I will ring the ward he was on.

DH thinks I am worrying unnecessarily & that it is just down to his muscles etc repairing, but I would like to be sure either way.

He is still having pain, so I rang the ward he was on. They said some pain is normal but as it's been a week of pain, best to contact GP/111. I then rang our GP surgery & a doctor will call me this morning.

DS seems pretty happy & recovering well apart from this, so I hope it is easily resolved Sad

The GP has rung & spoken to me. He said that he thinks the pain is most likely down to scar tissue forming & rubbing on DS' bladder when it is full.

We are going to drop in a urine sample to check for uti, but he is not concerned about that as no swelling or redness.

He was also reassured as DS is not in pain the whole time & recovering well with no fever. He said that the antibiotics should help with any possible infection.

I hope he's much better soon OP! I had a ruptured appendix and peritonitis last year ... and spent a week in hospital as the infection markers didn't come down for ages. I had weeks of antibiotics. Totally better now though and I understand it's unusual to be so ill.

No issues like your son, although it may be related to male anatomy. Just keep an eye as you are doing.
