Italian or French alternatives to Nutella? What am I thinking of?

Several years ago, I had Italian and French housemates who were waxing lyrical about a chocolate hazelnut spread that is a million times better than Nutella.

Any ideas what it might be? I need to try it!

gianduia spread maybe? (chocolate hazelnut mix like nutella but richer)

Fufumuji · 25/01/2021 19:07

Nutella is Italian and is so popular in France there have been riots over it. It's also produced in FRance as well as Italy.

It could be Nocciolata which is a high end organic alternative, that's fairly popular. But most people buy Nutella.

AbsentmindedWoman · 25/01/2021 19:24

Yes, I know Nutella is popular in France - we used to live on it on school trips, very healthy Grin

However, this was a conversation about how it pales in comparison to some other delicious spread. Has Nutella started adding palm oil in recent years?

Off to google those suggestions!

Not unless you think 1964 is recent?

Oh so palm oil has always been in it then? I didn't know. I am a Nutella fan but want to try these others, have looked them up and they look like a real treat.

It's very rare that I have something like this (have suddenly taken a massive craving!) so the more excellent chocolately decadence the better.

Morrisons own brand 'the best' dark chocolate and Hazlenut spread is SO much better than Nutella and no nasties in it. Definitely one to try.

sleepy78 · 25/01/2021 21:25

We live in France and my husband is obsessed about Nutella. I made him and the kids try alternatives because Nutella does have palm oil in it and we have never found another brand that passed the test...

BangingOn · 25/01/2021 21:27

There is a new higher cocoa content Nutella that is amazing, not sure whether that has been in France or Italy for longer?

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 25/01/2021 21:27

Nutella is Italian (as someone upthread pointed out) and I only ever saw it on holidays in France when I was a kid (still have some painted glasses that they used to sell it in with plastic lids).

Never likes it though!

MumUndone · 25/01/2021 21:31

Dulce de leche?

combatbarbie · 25/01/2021 21:33

My kids always loved the milk and white chocolate spreads in Spanish supermarkets.

AndeanMountainCat · 25/01/2021 21:51

Ah yes! We used to have something like this on our Spanish hols in the 80s. Yummy on a baguette.

And we had quite a collection of all the glasses that we kept.

Kilcaple · 25/01/2021 22:16

Not what you’re thinking of but Green and Black’s hazelnut chocolate spread is organic, is explicit about using small amounts of palm oil from sustainable sources certified by RSPO, and I think makes Nutella taste very sugary and greasy.

ARoseDowntown · 25/01/2021 22:41

FYI the last time I had a craving for Nutella, turned out I was pregnant.

Just saying!

TreacleMoon123 · 26/01/2021 00:05

Pan di Stelle? Its Italian & delicious!

Caswint · 26/01/2021 10:43

We buy Pernigotti. It's lush. Lots of no-palm oil alternatives are on supermarket shelves in Italy.

Caswint · 26/01/2021 10:50

@TreacleMoon123 Pan de Stelle is yum! I mean, I don't think I've ever had a bad chocolate hazelnut spread. Even better as gelato!

The stuff to look for is Sicilian pistacchio spread. Heaven. Grin

Fufumuji · 26/01/2021 11:26

Dulce de leche?

Given that it has neither chocolate or hazelnut in it, I'm going to say it's an unlikely contender for a chocolate-hazelnut spread.
