It's come to this: towels

What has COVID done to me???

We really need new towels, and I've got quite a lot of JL vouchers stacked up which I can use. I really like fluffy thick towels, so think will go for their Supima cotton range, as they're a good weight. www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-plush-supima-cotton-towels/white/p5291640?size=bath-sheet#product

Now here is my dilemma. My towel regime is as such: we have one set of towels out, one that's in the wash or airing cupboard. I currently have all white towels, so that's 4 bath sheets, 4 bath towels, 4 hand towels. My children are now bigger than me, and bath towels are too small, so to replace my current towels I will need 8 bath sheets. At £34 each, we're talking not very affordable at approx £250 before hand towels.

One issue I'm having is that I use a colour depositer shampoo, and it's started staining the white towels, so I should probably get a dark colour (DD also occasionally likes to dye her hair as well). But I started buying white towels so if there was a bleach cleaning incident, they wouldn't be ruined.

So, do I go for a colour (am thinking navy for kids and forest green for adults), or do I stick with white; do I replace a full 2 sets, or stick to just replacing one set for now, and buy a second set another time (this is what I've done previously), or do I bin off the whole idea and use the vouchers for something far more exciting 😁 (I really do need towels though - ours are now stained, and the ends are quite frayed).

How can Asda not have the "right colour"? You're buying boring WHITE ffs 😂

DinosApple · 27/01/2021 06:49

We got JL towels for a wedding present. Dark blue and mid blue. They are still lovely after 12 years, but the dark blue have faded slightly. Mid blue is still fine.

I recently bought hand towels to match our new bathroom. Now it's me paying for them, I went for Dunelm in their sale - great colours and nice and soft.

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 27/01/2021 06:56

I just bought some asda towels on the back of this thread. Will report back

I was so impressed with a holiday cottage towel (and this was pre covid when I had a life Grin) once I checked the label to see it was Asda, so much better than our £ John lewis wedding towels!

I don't care what colour our towels are, as long as they're not white, because I CBA doing separate washes or keeping them looking good - we have almost no white clothes.

Any time we might be getting round to needing new towels, I just keep an eye on Asda for a sale and it's the luck of the draw. We currently have a mix of bright blue, turquoise and grey.

I cannot believe the angst about towels.

We have about 15. All different colours, weights and brands. I wash them, fold them, put them in the cupboard. People grab - gasp! - the one at the top of the pile. It doesn't matter what colour or whether they are a child or adult. It then gets thrown in the wash.

Marmite27 · 27/01/2021 07:24

@OhToBeASeahorse

Our sainsburys towels (the more expensive sainsburys owns) have worn better than JL

@EmmaStone do you mind if I join in with a towel related question? Our towel.system is that we each have 2 bath towels, one on used one on the wash. We all have a different colour- I'm white, DH is navy and DS is bright orange. Now DD us rapidly getting yoo big for her baby towels. Question Is -
what colour?!

Lime green!

Stay citrus, but I think yellow would be too close to orange.

If you are washing a towel after one use (what a lot of work and use of water) I can see how you don't care so much.

If you have a towel assigned per person to last for a week or 2, then knowing who has which colour is very helpful.

JiminyLeeCricket · 27/01/2021 07:37

We have our own towel hooks.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 27/01/2021 07:39

Ditch the bath towels-useless for adults. Or use them as hand towels as they are so irritating. Old towels for dyeing hair.(wiping off excess peroxide cream ds-looking at you)

HangryPants · 27/01/2021 07:44

Why are people using bath sheets and bath towels?

We have a bath towel each and there are two hand towels for the bathroom.

I once "treated myself" to super expensive towels but actually much prefer using the Tesco ones. They're perfectly thick enough and softer than the very thick ones. Plus they dry quicker.

Reallybadidea · 27/01/2021 08:00

Surprised that nobody has mentioned soak and sleep towels yet. They're without a doubt the best towels I've ever had. Really thick and the ones I've had for about 4 years now still look new. I think they're about £25 for a bath sheet, so cheaper than JL and there are usually offers on if you spend over a certain amount.

PrincessOfAllOurTarts · 27/01/2021 08:04

Why are people using bath sheets and bath towels?
Her dc were using bath towels, her and her dh the bath sheets. Now her dc are huge so they all need more expensive bath sheets. Hence the issue.

It sounds like towels are important to you and that your towel lust will only be satisfied with the JL towels. However the risk of ruination is high and from two opposing factions. There can be no 'what colour towels shall I buy' safe option for you unless you stop with hair colours and with bleach.

If you bought the Asda towels you wouldn't be so devastated when they were ruined.

I think you should buy ONE Asda bath sheet. Each family member uses it for a week each. At the end of the week they write a detailed review and put it in a sealed envelope. At the end of the trials you have a family meeting and read the reviews and vote.

redcandlelight · 27/01/2021 08:04

we stopped using bath towels - too big.

we have a hand towel each and change them often.
we have quite a few of them, most from cawo, as they are good quality and have a sturdy loop sewn in.

doctorboo · 27/01/2021 08:29

@grapefruitish Ta for the link, when it says case 10 for flannels and case 5 for towels does that mean 10 flannels/5 towels?

Bath towels are 'too big' what are you? Elves?

@OhToBeASeahorse. Lime green! Orange wasn't a helpful choice!

redcandlelight · 27/01/2021 08:47

we are all tall (I'm the smallest at 5.9)

it's perfectly possible to dry yourself after shower/bath with a hand towel. if I want to wrap up after a bath I put on a robe.

HangryPants · 27/01/2021 09:43

Her dc were using bath towels, her and her dh the bath sheets.

Ahh, you're right. I'd misread it as "4 bath sheets, 4 bath towels and 4 hand towels per set", but that's it in total.

Ragwort · 27/01/2021 09:49

Going off to look at Asda towels now ....

saraclara · 27/01/2021 09:51

When all the family lived here, we had a different dark/ish colour each. Bath sheet and a hand towel in those colours, and some white hand towels for the wash basins.

Hahah me too.

I don't even buy thick bath sheets, I get the really cheap 2 for £7.99 ones from studio. They dry us perfectly fine and are so much quicker to wash and dry than thicker towels. All my good quality bath towels and sheets went to the charity shop a few years ago when I realised!!

We have loads of bath sheets/bath towels/hand towels but I do t think I could pick a matching set and we definitely don't have a towel regime. Grab a towel from the cupboard when you need it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 27/01/2021 10:18

Buy a couple of cheaper dark towels from jl for hair.

Yes, that's right!
