When you stop and think of mumset users....

What do you see? As in what sort of person do you see in your minds eye? Bizarre, but I think of a female with blonde hair, in her mid to late 30's sitting on a couch at night-time, lamp on, scrolling and replying whilst on her phone. I know... totally bizarre!

PS I am none of the above! Except for the phone and couch part.

@TwoZeroTwoZero

Btw, my description above is, in many ways, pretty much the opposite of me. I do have long hair, I have 2 children and often visit (or, at least, I used to) NT places but otherwise it's not me. I'm fat, short, unstylish and am more likely to have a plate of chips whilst my dc eat a sarnie, a carton of juice and some crisps. They have names that are often labelled as common on here. I have a very broad Yorkshire accent.

Tbf the only names that are acceptable on MN are royal and biblical names (and even
then you can sail too close to the wind with some of them)

peak2021 · 25/01/2021 14:12

I don't see MN members as being younger than the example the OP gives.

YakkityYakYakYak · 25/01/2021 14:17

I picture my ex-MIL. Probably cause a lot of the people on here seem to have the same forthright approach to life as her.

Middle-aged, middle-class, both home and own appearance neat, but practical rather than stylish. Sat on the sofa, dog next to her, drinking a glass of wine and looking at her iPad or laptop.

ShirleyPhallus · 25/01/2021 14:20

@GreenSlide

In my mind you all have very stylish haircuts and get regular trims and highlights, and wear very flattering jeans with striped Boden tops.

I'm not a proper MNer because I'm dumpy with scruffy hair and I can't even do a tinkly little laugh.

I too think of skinny jeans and striped tops and always those flat sandals that get recommended here, possibly sea salt

Otherwise I think of women with very dusty mirrors as thats often what gets posted on S&B

Ikora · 25/01/2021 14:22

People that are bored, lonely, mischief making, supportive.

Many people, that want to be alternative but aren’t, people that are alternative but don’t want to be.

But mainly lots of middle income introverts that want to be seen to be liberal minded.

Swingometer · 25/01/2021 14:28

Mid 30s, slim, blonde

She is wearing a stripy breton long sleeve t-shirt, jeans, immaculate converse trainers (no scuffs or mud) and a yellow anorak

Ladyporter · 25/01/2021 14:28

I made friends with some mumsnetters, it was interesting to see what they all looked like. All different in every way, just like in RL! Sadly a couple of them turned out to be pretty mean and decided who could and couldn't be in their gang!

WorraLiberty · 25/01/2021 14:29

For me it depends on the posting style but broadly speaking, I have an image of an overweight woman with brown shoulder length hair and glasses. Probably wearing a tunic top and leggings.

Love my jeans, Converse (I have many pairs in lots of colours) and my striped Breton tops, and I have the yellow Joules anorak. I'm not blonde anymore though (too lazy with the upkeep). I'm 38 though. Still mid 30s?

Re the scarf. If it's winter, I'm generally wearing a scarf as I hate having a cold neck. And I'm not wearing my Converse/anorak in the winter. I'm a practical boot/proper winter coat woman come winter.

HeadsOrHearts · 25/01/2021 14:50

Tinkly laugh! Grin Grin Grin

I still have no idea what this sounds like...

I generally don't have a picture except for a sunday afternoon when I see some slightly odd responses or threads and I often have this picture of MN'ers drinking while cooking Sunday lunch and getting squiffy and putting the world to rights or having a laugh on MN whilst hiding in the kitchen cooking the roast potatoes

This made me laugh as I do actually do this some Sundays!

BertieBotts · 25/01/2021 16:43

None (OK hardly any!) of the MNers I have met in real life have the perfect Joules/Breton/Boden wardrobe and immaculate hair, so I don't have that as part of my mental image at all!

If they are my age or younger (early 30s) then I picture them as a grown up, ex-emo with thick black glasses and shortish hair, dyed. A tattoo or three most likely.

Brogues · 25/01/2021 17:32

Various characters from Motherland. Mostly older than me... even though I’ll be technically mid 40s next month.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 25/01/2021 17:36

"When you stop and think of Mumsnet users ..."

I never do that.

Camomila · 25/01/2021 18:13

"No, Oscar darling, Mummy wants you to put that chocolate down and eat these carrot sticks dipped in her homemade hummus. Jessica sweetheart, stop bouncing on Mummy, she doesn't like it,"

I was telling my (not Oscar, but a name that's often given as an example) DS1 to please use the carrots sticks to eat the hummus and not just eat big spoonfuls of it yesterday, and had to laugh at myself.

I also like to play "spot the mumsnetter" at the park (based on their DCs rain gear...lots of layers/hi tech stuff = mumsnet in my brain)

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 25/01/2021 18:16

Like the Wii characters.

Trisolaris · 25/01/2021 18:24

Oh dear, so much of this is me. . .

Mid 30s, long brown hair, glasses, slim, skinny jeans. Don’t have the glass of wine out yet and cat rather than dog, middle income, liberal minded.

I’m even wearing a scarf (but not the mumsnet one!)

Must name change soon!

LadyCatStark · 25/01/2021 18:38

This (which incidentally is me but I’ve recently gone back to brown hair). She has her jeans rolled up slightly at the bottom to reveal her ankles and an updated version of the MN scarf (navy with tiny bees on it). She has 3 children (Oscar, Isabelle and Henry), the youngest is in a fancy travel system, and is slightly frazzled (but still immaculate of course) and dishing out raisins (or are raisins considered too sugary now?).

She drives an SUV as she needs the space for the travel system but never admits it on MN. She has a Labrador and when she takes him for a walk, she swaps her Converse for Hunter wellies (for the children too of course). He husband has an Important Job and she works part time to make sure that she can pick the kids up from school some days and fulfil her PTA duties.

Well yes, because that's just common sense surely? I am very particular about the waterproof-nees of coats though. Been soaked through too many times, so now I refuse to go for anything labelled water-resistant. And layers just make good sense for warmth.

Based on this, I'd be outed as a MNer with DS2. DS1 on the other hand... shorts and a short sleeve t-shirt, no matter the weather. After school today he was playing in the remnants of snow in the garden in trousers and a thin top. No jumper/coat/gloves.

DS2 is also the child that takes avocado and couscous to school. DS1 categorically does not.

LadyCatStark · 25/01/2021 18:40

Oh and she’s drinking a latte (free from Booths, my MNer is Northern 😂) in a reusable cup but he has a Chillies bottle for herself and a different colour Systema bottle for each child under the pushchair.

nancybotwinbloom · 25/01/2021 18:43

I did a thread about this last year but it was what do you think individual posters look like.

Some people were spot on on some posters. Some were way off.

All the ones describing me were way off.

You can't do that much any more because of all the namechanging. sadly.

@LadyCatStark
This is hilarious.
Clothing ✔️
Jeans rolled up ✔️ (though mostly because I'm short and they're long)
Scarf ✔️ (that bee one sounds lovely)

I have two children because DH wouldn't agree to a third. Oscar would have been boy number 3 and Isabel was DS2s girl name

We had an iCandy travel system
I don't technically have an SUV. It's an occasional 7 seater though. So close.

Love Converse, have Joules wellies not Hunter, but I'd rather wear my Dublins. DH won't let me get a dog (it'd be a greyhound).

DH is v. senior. I work p/t and he and I are co-chairs of the PTA.

I'm off to search for that bee scarf now.

Afromeg · 25/01/2021 18:50

Never really think of MNers unless I'm on MN. While I'm here though, I just see a crowd (of different ages, backgrounds, etc) flocking to a particular spot.

In real life, I've seen a few women who made me think "She looks like she hangs out on AIBU a lot". It's usually something to do with her facial expression and general demeanour, as though she can't wait to finish what she's doing so she can get back on MN and tear someone else a new one. Doesn't help that she's got her phone with her as she's either buying a coffee or getting into her car.

I could almost see her in my mind's eye as I walk past: key in the ignition, posts a quick YABVVU and sighs in contentment just before she drives off.

It’s a Joules one I may or may not have ordered it the other night.
