Are dental crowns meant to be like this?

I had 7 crowns fitted last week by my dentist. I'm really unhappy with them because they look nowhere near as good as my temporary crowns. They look badly fitted to me and dark lines are appearing between the crown and my gum on some teeth. He knows I'm unhappy but asked me to wait 2 weeks for a review appointment.

I can feel gaps and sharp edges between the crowns and my gums on the insides of my teeth. This can't be right can it? However careful I am with cleaning, that's going to be a magnet for food and decay. It's just that he's a highly respected, experienced and specialist dentist so I want to be sure of my ground before bringing this up.

I'm really disappointed and upset tbh.

No that doesn’t sound right. I’ve had a lot of dental work and nothing should be sharp and you’d expect no gaps.

Thanks Buffalo I thought so.

I got my first crown a few months ago. The first thing I noticed was how smooth and seamless it was in comparison to the temporary one.

My gum was very sensitive for about a week afterwards but this settled down.
I would go back and discuss your concerns with dentist. 7 crowns would cost a small fortune so you should be 100% satisfied.

Thanks.
I agree - it is costing a small fortune! I suppose because he's been my dentist for decades and I trusted him 100%, I'm really surprised that he's done such a shoddy job - so surprised that I've started wondering if it's me being too fussy. It really isn't though. I feel very awkward about the whole thing now, in a way that I wouldn't if I hadn't known him for such a long time.

It's true that they take a week or two to 'settle' but they shouldn't feel rough to your tongue. I always noticed a significant improvement between a temp crown and getting the real one put on.

Theredone5 · 24/01/2021 19:01

I have had veneers and 1 crown for a back molar. The crown shouldn't be as you described, it should blend in with your natural teeth and look like a real tooth.

I'd suggest you demand to go back and for them to rectify what they've done.

I spent almost £10k on my smile and Its so important to get it the way YOU imagined it to look.

Don't give up x

LetMeOut2021 · 24/01/2021 19:02

I have one crown and it’s sharp on the outside, it’s really irritating. I had it fitted just before lockdown and haven’t been able to have it rectified. I don’t have the other issues though.

Oversize · 24/01/2021 19:07

The sharpness is when I have my tongue behind my teeth. There's the sharp edge of the top of the crown, then a gap then my gum.
I've decided I'm going to drop off copies of photos and a letter detailing my exact concerns. I don't want to wait a week, have the discussion and then have to wait again for an appointment to fix them.

Op, Is your dentist a specialist in dental crowns.
Just because he’s a good general dentist, it doesn’t mean that he is an expert in cosmetic dentistry
A cosmetic dentist is only as good as their ceramist .
I wouldn’t even wait two weeks. I would tell him that you are feeling some discomfort and want to be seen immediately

I had crowns fitted by 2 ‘specialists’. The difference between the two was staggering. As the first dentist fitted the first crown I just assumed that was what a crown was like. It wasn’t until another dentist did another that I realised how awful the first was. I have now had it redone by the second dentist and I honestly can’t tell the crowned teeth from the normal ones, not in look, feel, or function. You should definitely go back.

Oversize · 24/01/2021 19:38

Thanks for the advice. I'll definitely go back. I think there are problems with placing, fitting and in 1 case the crown itself has been made badly. It looks 'wavy' in profile.

Oh wow! Mine is markedly different. I paid £500 for mine!!
AtleastitsnotMonday · 24/01/2021 20:13

Hate to say it but I paid a lot more than that!

SuburbanCrofter · 24/01/2021 20:56

I've just had mine replaced at approx. £600 per tooth. They are better than the temporary crowns, they look amazing and I can feel no rough edges or gaps. There are certainly no lines at the top of my teeth. That sounds like really bad work OP.

Oversize · 12/02/2021 14:26

Oh ffs! One of the crowns has just fallen out taking the post with it. There's nothing above the gum line now. I'm so cross and upset.
I've got an appointment with a different dentist in the same practice tomorrow.

My dentist was full of oh don't go abroad as it'll be shoddy work. Couldn't be much shoddier than this nonsense surely.

My crown came out twice, each time within a week.... However Better than the temporary one that I ate! 🤣

Hated it for about 6 weeks... Felt wrong... Suddenly didn't notice anymore...

happytoday73 · 12/02/2021 14:31

Sorry posted too soon... I'd go back and get them to check

Wbeezer · 12/02/2021 14:35

My dentist told me that a small gap was better for cleaning!

Oversize · 12/02/2021 15:18

Really Wbeezer? That sounds nuts tbh.

He did say that in relation to the temp crown, I'll ask him when he puts the permanent one in.

Oversize · 12/02/2021 22:20

Thanks. It'll be interesting to know.
