Non blanching spots

Hi guys, my 5yr old keeps getting these non blanching spots. They come and they go. He has had them on his chest, ears and face before, I’ve taken him to the gp a few times before and they say it’s nothing. His well in himself otherwise. I just don’t understand why he keeps getting them. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Thank you

Yes but it continued to get worse and then other symptoms appeared

When we took him to the out of hours urgent care one weekend he was taken to hospital for blood tests as they suspected a blood disorder

He is fine now after a month or so of treatment

Sometimes it’s nothing, sometimes it’s something, sometimes it’s worse.

Does he have any other symptoms?

Bruises easily?
Tired?
Sweating more than normal at night?

I get them and in certain places they are known as HSP (Henoch Schonlein Purpura). They are relatively common in childhood (so my doctor told me) but it's worth getting them checked out because occasionally they mean somethings not right, usually with the kidneys.

Don't panic though, if it is this, I've read loads about it and usually, children just grow out of it with no ill effect.

Thank you for your replies. They first started about 2and half months ago and they come and go. He is otherwise well in himself. Other symptoms are he seems to sweat in the night where his undershirt is wet, but normally he rarely ever sweats even when it’s hot his just not a sweaty child. Also every now again he complains of pain on his knees and the back of his knees but that’s it. A couple of months ago when he said his knee hurt him he started crawled for an he or so but then was fine x

@Mumtothreexx not to alarm you, but the night sweats are a real concern. Please get to the GP first thing.

Mumtothreexx · 24/01/2021 17:05

@Eeve he saw a paediatrician on Monday and I told her all everything including the night sweats. They did some bloods and she said if anything she up she will call me but haven’t heard anything yet. What do you think the night sweats could be?

I have a child who gets these - it has been happening for years. We have seen Dr's and had tests but nothing comes up. In our case it might be some kind of hereditary connective tissue disorder which causes some issues (but none serious at the moment).

Anyone know how to attach a picture on here as I can’t seem to figure it out? So I can post a picture of the spots he has xx

You should see a paperclip icon underneath the comment box. That will help you to add a picture.

@Onedropbeat what did the tests show for your son if you don’t mind me asking?

My daughter had this as a baby and young child, she even spent a night in hospital because of them once. She was and is absolutely fine and and there was never an explanation.

Ds used to get them regularly. We'd trot off to A&E, sit around 5 hours while he had bloods done and then be told viral rash and leave.

I think we had a year where he was sent by the GP about a dozen times. They varied between half a dozen big round bright red spots (about 2p piece size), lots of tiny pin prick red dots, and the entertaining time when they started at his temples (these were bright blue and about 2mm across, and appeared like a regular pattern with around 2mm between them) and spread rapidly downwards. By the time we were at A&E they were at his shoulders, you could actually watch them coming out.
First one was about 2" long on the inside of his arm when he was about 10 days old.

After a year I made an agreement with the GP that unless he appeared ill with them I wouldn't take him. He was about 2yo then. He continued getting them regularly until he was 5 or 6yo. Even now in his teens he occasionally gets a few when he's a bit run down. He's had lots of blood tests (strange child likes blood tests, he finds them fascinating, which is a good thing as he's majorly allergic to magic cream) and nothing has ever come to light.

I think for him, it's just one of those things. But if they want to investigate further, I would go with it as it's worth getting it checked.

I had HSP aged 8. Mine came on very suddenly though almost within an hour, I’d been generally run down for a few eels with colds but then covers head to toe in a non blanching rash. Taken to hospital and monitored for many months. If they thought it was HSP they’d be on it honestly. And as far as I’m aware HSP doesn’t come and go over time. It tends to be a one off or occur again at an older age. It could be some kind of connective tissue disorder as stated about. Especially with the night sweats and joint pain etc but if he’s been seen about it recently I wouldn’t worry, they’ll figure it out or it could just be nothing. I’d be concerned if he felt unwell alongside this rash
@Onedropbeat what did the tests show for your son if you don’t mind me asking?
@Mumtothreexx
It was ITP. (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura)

He had a lot of platelet transfusions and eventually improved

He’s still under care of consultant but hasn’t had any relapses

They were worried before diagnosis that it was leukaemia as it presents very similarly and he had further tests at Great ormond street to rule this out first

Eeve · 25/01/2021 18:40

As @Onedropbeat mentioned, I would be worried about leukaemia, BUT you saw a paediatrician on Monday. So do not panic. They're looking into it.
