Reusable period pads-is there a talk board?

I thought about Style and Beauty but that doesn’t seem quite right.

I want to get some for DD and don’t really want to spend a fortune as she may not like them.
Can you soak in Napisan? I’ve read you mustn’t bleach them but I’m not sure if Napisan is recommended.
How do you wash them?
I’d like to buy her ones that don’t rustle and have wings.

I have a small bucket with a lid in the bathroom, and I soak the used ones in it in cold water. When I wash them, I do a short, cold water rinse cycle with the pads before putting the rest of the laundry in the machine. I do a normal 30 or 40 degree wash.
I've tried lots of different brands and I like imse vimse brand best - earthwise girls is a good website to look at. I've been using period pants (cheeky pants brand) for the last couple of months and they are brilliant, I definitely prefer them to the pads. They get washed the same way as the pads.

I second earthwise girls.

They do a starter kit fir about 20 quid which contains 3 different sizes/absorbances,

Its perfect as it's not too expensive, to see if you get on with the whole concept.

If you do then they also do lots of other brands, and you can find the ones you like best. Honor your flow and homestead emporium and TCS eco are realky really good.

But the earthwise ones are cheap, effective and the starter kit is great to try out for the first time as I said.

Great, I’ve ordered her a starter kit from Earthwise. Thanks, that’s a great idea as they send different brands and I can see which ones she prefers.

I warn you now though...they are addictive...

You will have hundreds before u know it Blush

The box has arrived! I’ve opened it as the pads need washing before use. 2 pads, 2 liners, box eco disposables, zip wet bag, sweets, bracelet and worry dolls.
I think I’ll be buying a few a month of whatever she gets on with. They look so cool and are so soft.

I hope your dd likes.Smile

Whatwouldscullydo · 27/01/2021 13:41

Oh and id get yourself a large wet bag or something from amazon to hang on the back of the bathroom door so there's somewhere to dump the used stuff

movingonup20 · 27/01/2021 13:48

I would also look at pants as well - Sainsbury's now sells them but my girls and I all have modibodi

user1471523870 · 27/01/2021 13:52

I second pants too. After few years of using the reusable pads (which I loved) I then discovered the pants, and they are even greater for me. I am not sure if you have a heavy period, but what I like is:

  • they are not bulky so I don't have to worry about them being noticeable
  • they don't move or needs readjustment ever
  • they are black, meaning I never have to think about how to remove the stains
fireplaceburning · 27/01/2021 13:55

Period pants much better! They are fab.
Modibodi red are the best we've found.

MrTrellis · 27/01/2021 13:57

I will probably get her a pair from of pants from Modibodi to try. The only trouble with those is she’ll grow out of them and they’re quite expensive. I did look at the Luna range in Sainsburys and Asda I think but they got poor reviews from a few MN.
How do you change the pants during the school day if you wear trousers? She wears leggings for PE, gym and dance classes, would they show through?

Oh just in case you don't know, don't use softener. A cap full.of white vinegar can be used instead.

MrTrellis · 27/01/2021 16:13

Thanks, we don’t use softener because of allergies but I didn’t know white vinegar worked!

They sometimes need a a few mins.in the tumble dryer when you do another load to help keep them soft.
Although the earthwise brand which I believe is one of the ones in the box stays pretty soft anyway
