Looking for a book recommendation. One that will appeal to a wide range of people.

Hi.My sister is a teacher; Head of Department in a secondary school. She is aware that certain teachers - mainly those who live alone - are struggling a bit at this time, and she is looking to set up a sort of virtual social committee.
As part of this, she'd like to form a book group for those who'd like to join in. She has asked for my help in choosing their first title. It would have to be a book that would appeal to both genders, a wide-ish age range, from professor types to non-bookish, outdoorsy types.
Having had long Covid, I'm a bit out of touch with reading, as I can't focus on much more than Netflix currently!
I'm thinking a 'safe' bet, something that is either a bit upbeat in this current climate, or else very gripping.
Any ideas?
Thanks Smile

Meant to say that I did post this on 'Books', but it seems very quiet ...

WhereThe Crawdads Sing by Delia Owen
The Beekeeper Of Aleppo. Can't remember author but our book group loved it!

Any Kate Atkinson or Nevil Shute.

Check out the Library stock before suggesting, to ensure that they have enough copies.

Last time I recommended a text to my book club, I suggested that everyone brought along their favourite book from their childhood. That led to some nice discussions. Could she suggest something like this?

For the outdoorsy types (and everyone else) Touching the Void by Joe Simpson.

I used to belong to a book club that had a theme rather than a specific book, so favourite childhood book (as above), favourite travel book, favourite classic, biography etc. Was a good way of keeping the pressure off and usually meant everyone had something to contribute (and was a great way of getting recommendations).

But I'd recommend Every Human Heart by William Boyd for a book choice if you want specifics. Should appeal to men and women.

Anything by Santa Montefiore, Lucinda Riley, Rosanna Ley, Tracy Rees and Rachel More 😊😊.

It's a lovely idea. Maybe start with a "classic" as an ice breaker?
