Do you give calpol for a high temperature and at what point?

My 5 year old woke up this morning and happily skipped into our room but when I touched her she was burning hot. She was acting totally fine but I took her temp because she was red in the face and as I say felt hot. It was 39.5.

All day she has been hot but acting normal. Now she has a slight upset tummy and her temp was 39.8 when I checked before. She still doesn’t seem that unwell. I have given her calpol this evening because 39.8 seemed really high but I’m just wondering if it’s best to bring down the fever or not!

I have no idea where she has picked this up we haven’t seen anyone or been out for quite a while!!

I've been to hospital 3 times with my DD, and it's because I was too diffident about giving meds to bring down very high temp. Now I use it far more readily.

We didn't often give Calpol etc for just high temp. Only if in pain / discomfort.
Probably at 39+ I might have done. That's a very high temp for her not to be complaining. Have you checked the thermometer is working (use it on yourself)?

My theory is that if I have a temperature of that level then I'd be jolly miserable, so I'd give calpol to the child.

One of mine had a dreadful habit of if her temperature hit about 38.5 it would then shoot up to 40/41 and stay there until you'd given her about 3 days worth of full ibroprofen and calpol. There was never any specific reason for it. However I always tried to bring her temperature down if it was up because it was better to give an early dose than 3 days of full dosage.

Ds it was always an ear ache with it, so he needed it for the pain.

Cautious - yes I checked on me and my 8 year old and we are both 36. Something

DS once had a temperature of almost 40, had grey lips and was tootling about playing totally normally! I think he was 2. 111 sent a paramedic round so we went to A&E (turned out to be a nasty ear infection).

I give paracetamol if they’re obviously uncomfortable or unable to sleep - just as I’d take myself.
