If you did a degree in Zoology

Can I ask what you went on to do and how much you earn / earned doing it?

My son is interested in Zoology, has applied for Biology courses with a high Zoology component, but is also considering a second choice which doesn’t include much zoology partly on the basis that he doesn’t think it pays that well long term.

My SIL did it and now works for an ecological charity in the fundraising department, she's also written a few books which have been published by the charity.

The only other person I know who did zoology did a grad med conversion course a few years later and is now a GP.

Not sure this is much help, but George McGavin is a Zoology graduate and he said his professor always told him it should be pronounced 'zo-ology' because zoology would need 3 o's at the beginning.Smile

Today 13:53 midsomermurderess

The 'tirade' is one of the most tiresome aspects of this site. So much bloody bickering and charging off on tangents

That rant was completely and utterly bonkers, I hope the poster gets the help they need. Loads of people seem to be on here seeking a barney - god knows why I keep coming back but I do.

A friend who ended up doing a job that would on the face of it, be most likely done by someone with a zoology degree ( science communication at one of the most respected zoos in the U.K. ) had a general biology degree and worked in science communication in other areas to build up experience.

DS has a biology and zoology degree and got a graduate post with Rentokil.

FrTedCurly · 24/01/2021 16:13

@Bananajam can I ask what kind of graduate post your son has with Rentokil and how he finds it? Looking for a career change and a bit more flexibility with work. Feel free to PM me to avoid derailing the thread.

What would you call it? Pretending internet doesn't exist? Nor do pandemics? Pretending the world where half the population are given a degree is exactly the same as when a degree was for only a few? Pretending that there are lifelong high paid careers for barely literate degree holders? Pretending any topic can be studied in one chunk, learning all there will ever need to be known? Pretending the single method to learn anything is to do it 'full-time', declining to work? A parent cannot believe such myths, unless their comprehension is that the earth is flat . Yet they encourage their young to waste years of their lives on something far worse than telling them lies about the existence of Father Christmas.

David attenborough's biography is worth a read on this. It explains how he got from a zoology degree to where he is.

recluse · 24/01/2021 18:46

Thanks a lot - I really appreciate the continuing messages and am passing them on to him. Thanks also to the everyone who has wished him good luck 😊.

He’ll definitely be doing Biology with a view to specialising in Zoology, so he will have time to see the lay of the land and make his mind up.

Yes he’s got that so hopefully he has had more than a cursory look at it - I’ll remind him.

Leaving aside the Zoology aspect of the question, even if Biology ends up being a springboard to something not entirely related, or not related at all, it will still be worth it from many points of view IMO.

I was gonna say the same, Rentokil take on Grads who have Zoology. They start as technicians but can are encouraged to try all types of role and fine out where they want to go.

Not me but SIL, as someone up the thread said, she is a secondary biology teacher. She had to do some sort of conversion course as well as a PGCE though.
