What do you serve risotto in?

I'm just making risotto & it always goes on plates.

I fancy some sort of nice bowls; I'm picturing something flat-ish, but not plates.

Anyone have anything nice like that? :)

It seems what we call a ‘bowly plate’ in our house is just a soup plate with a rim. That’s what I’d use for risotto and pasta. I find they fit in the dishwasher a lot better than my pasta bowls which are really too deep. But I am obviously a heathen.

Another vote for pasta bowls. We use them for most things that would usually fall off the edge of a normal plate. Although I do have some of the square plates from IKEA, and they have a nice lip around the edge.

Pasta Bowls.

It took me the longest time to get them - they were always surprisingly expensive. Well not in the grand scheme of things, but when you've bought a full dinner service for £25, paying £4 per bowl felt a bit much.

Especially as when I wanted them, it was only for the odd casserole (we have deep cereal bowls otherwise), or a sloppy pasta dish.

But honestly they get used all the time. I got these fancy ones that were on clearance at Sainsbury's, so they're all colourful. Pasta, curry, loads of dishes get put in them. No longer have to have a little wall of rice / other carbs around a liquidy dish.

Unless you had something like this in mind? Here

I think its a design feature though rather than a specific name, I typed in deep plates (which bought up a lot of pasta bowls)

Saying that, "rimmed plates" brings up much more similar ones, but I think you'd have be careful ordering online if the photo angles aren't quite showing the edge properly

Pasta bowls get used more that plates or cereal bowls in our house. They're a must have.

I was coming to recommend these!

Another vote for pasta bowls here. We use them for almost everything! I can't think of many people I know IRL who actually own any - I've found my people here Grin

i got some lovely white pasta bowls from Morrisons...usually on some sort of promo too, nice fine rims and have stood up very well to dishwasher hurly burly.

They had some smaller ones too, which i saw last time i was in, i keep meaning to go back and get them as yaknow....portion control!

Direwolfwrangler · 22/01/2021 19:07

Another vote for in a pasta bowl. Mine don’t have a rim though. We eat many things from them, especially in winter!

HeronLanyon · 22/01/2021 19:12

I have deep
And shallow pasta bowls. For risotto if that was all I was having (and it sometimes is) then I’d use flatter pasta bowl. But heaped up so it stays hot. If I’m having eg brocolli with it then I use a plate.

StCharlotte · 22/01/2021 19:40

We use these from Denby. They're a liiiittle bit smaller than a standard plate so better for portion control. Which is important for greedy me and greedy DH Grin

It's funny you mention risotto though because it's one of my favourite things to cook and eat but literally just this week, I've gone off it. Ditto shepherds pie. Odd.

Ninkanink · 22/01/2021 19:44

We have these.

Sgtmajormummy · 22/01/2021 19:57

According to Masterchef Italy, Grin a risotto should still be liquid enough to “flow” onto the plate, so a shallow one is better, also for cooling and plenty of Parmesan on top!

I use rimmed pasta bowls. These are nice from IKEA

ApolloandDaphne · 22/01/2021 20:09

We have Denby pasta bowls too. We use them for loads of meals. We had chilli in them tonight.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 22/01/2021 20:13

Another vote for Denby pasta bowls. Most of my stuff is 16 years old. I've topped up the odd few bits here and there. Almost everything goes in them bar Christmas dinner

We have the same set!

StarsonaString · 22/01/2021 22:57

I have similar to @Ninkanink except mine have have a wider shallow bowl and a scalloped edge. They were my great grandmothers and probably date from the 40s. Brilliant for anything like pasta, risotto, chilli etc and enough of a lip to balance garlic bread on.

Thank you thank you thank you!

I had some vintage dishes like these which were our go-to for risotto, pasta etc but we've only got one left so have been using something else. I've been searching for replacements for so long and there they were in Ikea all along...
