Thought I’d broken the puppy, she’s fine but I can’t stop crying

8w old puppy, home for 6 days. Ridiculously gorgeous, feisty, just absolutely awesome

This morning I was lifting a large pot plant (3ft fern to give an idea of size) down from a ledge and she jumped up and nipped me when it was about 2/3 of a foot off the ground and shocked me and I dropped it. It half fell on her and she screamed like I’ve never heard a dog scream before and flopped in my arms.

After 5 minutes she perked up (housemate who’s dog she is checked her over) and walked off with a limp that went within 10 minutes (not walking the whole time). She has an appointment at the vets anyway this morning so is having a check over anyway but looks totally fine.

But I cannot stop crying, I feel awful, I keep seeing it fall and thinking she could be so much more hurt, I could’ve hurt her so badly.

This feels ridiculous but I’m really shaken up over it. Not entirely sure why I’m starting a thread but everyone else seems to think I’m nuts this morning!

That sounds really horrible, but the dog seems fine now so try not to worry about it. Hopefully the vet can give you some reassurance today.

Insidelaurashead · 22/01/2021 12:15

It was an accident, OP. technically caused by her (although we won't blame her because she's a puppy she doesn't know consequences) the vet will reassure you, don't blame yourself

DuzzyFuck · 22/01/2021 12:24

Oh OP it's such an awful feeling. Not long after he moved in DP caught DCats tail in a door and made him YOWL like I've never heard before. He was fine after 10 minutes, swishing his tail about as normal, letting me stroke it. No lasting effects.

DP on the other hand still gets upset by the incident many months later and is extremely careful with doors.

It was an accident pure and simple, and no harm done. Hopefully the vet visit will provide you with some reassurance, but please try not to beat yourself up about it x

When my dog was about three months old I picked him to stop him chewing something and he wriggled out of arms (puppies are very wriggly!) and landed on the hard floor and cried like nothing I’d heard! It was horrible and really upset me, but he was absolutely fine.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 22/01/2021 13:19

I trapped my dogs tail in the window (he was sitting on the sill and I thought he might leap out..). He yowled and I really thought I had broken it but it was just bruised. Hopefully it will teach him not to jump up and it's good you have the vets appt but try not to worry, it was an accident

CrystalFlyer · 22/01/2021 13:49

Puppy was about 10 weeks old and going through a nipping phase. I was bent over and he got me right on the back of my arm - it really hurt! I instinctively jerked my arm away and stood up - but puppy was still holding on and I flung him a little ways and he landed on his back! He didn’t move for a second and I was certain I’d broken his back/killed him! But then he stood up and shook it off and was fine! I was in bits though!

When mine was about 14 weeks old I accidentally shut his tail in the door. He screamed and ran down the garden and I felt AWFUL.

He was absolutely fine Grin

Insidelaurashead · 22/01/2021 14:19

I can imagine all these dogs doing that thing where something has happened they're not happy with, and they do a stress shake and then a loud 'huff' and strop off 🤣

CrackOpenTheGin · 22/01/2021 14:24

I’ve had some terrible pet accidents over the years - chopping the end of the cat’s tail off when closing the window and the dog putting his tail in the huge shears when I was just about the snip springs to mind Blush Mine resulted in tails being cut off, bloodbaths and lots of vets fees as well as tears and horrendous guilt. Don’t be too hard on yourself. It happens to us all.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 22/01/2021 14:24

Ours jumped off the sofa (where she was on dhs knee) before we could catch her and just lay silent on the carpet. Dh in tears, I’m hysterical. She just got up and wandered off. We realised at this point she is a little tank.

hiredandsqueak · 22/01/2021 14:29

I'm sure puppy will be fine. Our dog screams like a banshee at any knock however slight. One memorable occasion was her being caught by a towel as I was taking laundry out of the machine. Still hasn't stopped her standing next to the washing machine whilst I load and unload it though.

ZooeyS · 22/01/2021 14:30

Oh my god @crackopenthegin! You cut two tails off?! 'It happens to us all' seems a bit of a sweeping statement Grin

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 22/01/2021 14:37

When my jrt was a pup a huge bale of haylage rolled onto him in the hayloft. It knocked the wind out of him but he was fine, and he learned to keep out the way!

DoodleLovin · 22/01/2021 14:39

How’s the puppy?
I get upset when I walk on my dogs tail and he cries so totally feel you!

PineappleSun · 22/01/2021 14:55

Stepped on my cat's tail a few times, she makes the most awful noise but its always been absolutely fine. You'd think she'd learn humans are unpredictable but no, she's always hanging around at my ankles and behind me tempting danger.

Honeyroar · 22/01/2021 15:00

A horse where I worked stood on my puppy years ago. She yelped like she was dying and was on three legs for a day. But she was fine.

Your friend’s puppy seems ok and is being checked by a vet. Accidents happen. Try and be nice to yourself.

Icequeen01 · 22/01/2021 16:33

We had a horrific accident with one of my cats years go. She was a very timid cat who we had managed to tame thanks to the help of the wonderful Celia Hammond.

We had a very big garden and at the end it had an area which we couldn't cut with a lawn mower due to there being so many trees. My DH used to have to use a scythe. He was scything the grass one day and didn't realise the cat was sleeping in the grass. He must of scared her and instead of running away from him she ran towards him and he caught her face. It was THE most awful thing and my DH was in pieces. We rushed her to the vet and she had to have her jaw wired and her pallet stitched. She recovered well but we were traumatised.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 22/01/2021 18:49

Thank you for the kindness! I’ve spoken to 4 people about it. 2 think I’m being ridiculous and 2 agree it’s an ok reaction so not sure if this is OTT or not!

The sound she made was horrific, I truly thought I’d broken her back or pelvis, a leg at the absolute least.

Vet says she’s totally fine, housemate says she’s fine. I’ve cried a further 4 times since 12 today and can’t stop replaying it in my brain.

It’s like a kid rubbing into the road and having a near miss. That sick feeling every time you think what if

So sorry to everyone else who’s experienced it

From the look of it yours still hasn't forgiven you Grin

GrinGrinGrin this made me laugh out loud! OP you poor thing, it happens - not got a dog yet so not to me personally but it’s like the baby thing - at some point every baby in the universe falls off something/over something/into something, is totally fine, and mum/dad is completely traumatised forever 🤣 such posts rock up here on MN often! Clearly it’s a rite of passage for dogs as well as humans Grin don’t beat yourself up, pup is fine and obviously made of tough stuff.

StarsonaString · 22/01/2021 19:48

Its horrible. I always feel awful after my kitties run in front of my feet in the dark, earning them a soft kick!

I know someone who lost a cat when it stuck its head out of the heavy front door as she was shutting it. The cat was beheaded. Sad She was still traumatised and guilty 50 years later!

RedRiverHog · 22/01/2021 19:56

Oh God the noise a puppy makes is unreal. My dog at 9 week old flung himself out my arms as I walked in the front door and hit the wall. That split second where he screamed but didn't get up nearly killed me! I rushed him to the vets (out of hours, extra £100) only for him to be bouncing around by then.

The noise, gif the noise, it was like screaming at the top of her tiny lungs, Absolutely awful .

We had a cuddle tonight and I bought her a new toy out of guilt Grin and she seems absolutely fine. But god I’ve aged today!
