Any seamstresses able to give me any help? ((Pic)

I bought a sweater online, it's arrived but the fit doesn't suit me as the ribbed hem tucks the sweater in and I'd rather it be straighter all the way down instead of the hem nipped in... if that's makes sense.

I can't return it so I'm wondering if I Shiism unpick the ribbed hem totally or if I can cut a V shape on both sides so it doesn't pull the sweater inwards.

Any help??

Is that a sweater made with knitting needles or a sweatshirt made for working out? If the former I can't help as that is knitting knowledge If the latter you can unpick the side seams up about four inches and make it look like intentional side slits. If you can sew by hand - finish with a neat small blanket stitch on the raw edges. But you don't really need to finish if it's sweatshirt material as it won't ravel. It's just to make it look nicer. Try a contrasting colour for fun.

It's sweatshirt material...
what about if I don't hand stitch the ribbed part, will that look right ? It's stitched one side but the other side I'll have to cut it

If it is sweatshirt material you could just cut the ribbing off. The bottom may roll up a bit but plenty of jumpers are sold like that in h&m and such like. Just use your sharpest scissors and keep the cut straight.

I'd be tempted to hand stitch a tiny column of stitches just either side of the current seam, then unpick or cut the existing seam and if the ribbing unravels, the hand stitches will stop it unraveling too far. If you want a neat edge, leave enough to turn a tiny hem and sew it down on the inside. A small V shape notch could look good and should help the ribbing lie flat.

Ohug · 22/01/2021 13:27

@TeaMilkNonePlease Is that just on the ribbing please?

If there is a seam on each side then you could do as Tea suggested.

Sew a blunt topped triangle up one side, as far up as you like, across the top about 3 - 4 mm, back stitch and cut the thread. Then sew UP the other side - sewing down might skew the material.

Wash it and see how it sits. There are other things you can do if you don't like the way it oes, or does not roll.

I do this a lot with men's tops from charity shops. I have to get my hips in there somehow Smile

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/01/2021 13:33

Oh, I forgot, - once you have sewn it you can unpick the original seam!

If there is no seam on the other sde...

.... sew it as before. Then sew 2 close lines of sticyching up the middle, be sure to cross the blunt top of the triangle by a couple of stitches, back stitch at the top and bottom of all line of stitching. Then carefully cut between the stitch lines.

Knittedfairies · 22/01/2021 13:34

I think TeaMilkNonePlease has it; a row of tiny stitches either side of the seam on the ribbing and a careful unpicking of the original seam.

ReviewingTheSituation · 22/01/2021 13:41

It looks pretty badly made from the close up. The ribbing material won't unravel (I've sewed with that kind of ribbing a lot), but if you unpick the side seam (I presume you're only planning to split to ribbing seam, not the main jumper?) it's likely to be a bit of a mess inside. But a nice contrast blanket stitch where you split it should cover it.

Ariela · 22/01/2021 14:21

I would unpick the seam, to somewhere about the same amount above the ribbing as the depth of the ribbing, and then get some either matching or contrast bias binding or a small piece of fabric - I'd perhaps choose a print and cover the exposed seam edges if you wanted contrast, OR get some matching grey wool and do a neat but closely stitched blanket stitch finish.

Thanks for your all help!

I'm not a great sewer so do you think it would
Actually look ok if I do it myself as a novice or is it worth me paying someone else to do it ? I mean it is really easy?

It is really easy. Mainly because you stitch before you unpick/cut.

Be brave, Read the thread and see what instructions make sense to you and then sit down and just do it. If sewing by hand it should take you an hour os so to do - maybe an hour each side if you are really feeling scared of it!

Once you have done it you'll wonder what you were scared of, honest!

And remember. There are lots of ways of tidying the edges. But you don't have to think of that now. Just get on and sew up and cut!!!
