How do you get the pointy bit out...?

... of a nice glass jar you want to keep, after the candle in it has burned down and left that little metal spike thing glued to the bottom on the inside? We don't want to put another candle in it, we want to keep the jar and use it for something else.

Does anybody have any handy hints please? tia

Stick it in the freezer and then should be able to pull it out

I put it in really hot water and it kind of melts the glue and prise it out with a knife.

Pour boiling water over it, the let it set, the wax rises to the top and sets and you can just pop it out.

Pour in boiling water and wait a few mins before trying to carefully dislodge it with a spoon. Just be careful not go scald yourself

Some good tips, thanks.

Just a knife does the trick and I'd be worried about boiling water breaking the glass. Just hot soapy water and a good scrub will get rid of any waxy residue.

I scrape as much of the wax off as I can, then put the glass through the dishwasher and the little metal disc just falls out.

bluecheesefan · 21/01/2021 17:10

The wax is all scraped out anyway, and I don't have a dishwasher. We've tried to jemmy the thing off with a knife already.

Right, I'm off to boil the kettle. Desperate times mean desperate measures.

Boiling water? Fail.
Prising off with knife? Fail.
Hot soapy water with or without dishwasher? Fail.

Long-handled pliers, a firm grip and brute force? Success.

There were three of the blighters and it must have been superglue, because that's still there, practically fused to the glass, but I got the metal bits off at least.

Was here to suggest nail varnish remover but good to see you got it off!
