Command strips

Are the eh actually good at holding frames up? Am looking at the large ones which states it can hold up to 7.2kg weight. Is that really true??? Has anyone used it, and if so how long did it last and the weight of your frames?
I want to put a canvas up which weighs 2.2kj

I’ve used them for that sort of weight and so far so good about 6 months in. I did put on twice as many as it says I need to be on the safe side. They’re easy to use though. If you’re painting you do need to wait (was impatient at first 🙈)

psychomath · 20/01/2021 21:48

I've had some holding up a mirror for just under two years and it hasn't fallen down yet. I was sceptical too but as long as you follow the instructions and attach them properly they seem to work fine.

longtompot · 20/01/2021 21:48

My recent experience with the sticky hooks is they don't seem to work as well as they used to. But, these were around my living room window frame, which is south facing so may have got too hot? The sticky table went brittle and they just fell off.
However, I have seen them used. Stacey Solomon on insta just did a mirror wall with mirrors in picture frames, and she used the Velcro ones.

AppleKatie · 20/01/2021 21:48

On something heavy I always put extra on to be safe but that’s paranoia I’ve never had reason to mistrust.

Don’t expect them to come cleanly off the wall afterwards- that bit is definitely a lie but they do last forever (well 10 years and counting in the case of some of mine).

Bluntness100 · 20/01/2021 21:49

Yes they work fine, very solid, just make sure you use enough and the right weight

They can take some of the paint off the wall when you remove them though.

psychomath · 20/01/2021 21:50

I perhaps wouldn't use a single one for a canvas though, I think two smaller ones at each top corner would be better if that's an option so that it can't twist. Otherwise knocking the canvas crooked might weaken the attachment, if you see what I mean.

DuzzyFuck · 20/01/2021 21:51

They didn't hold DP's (quite heavy but not 7kg) framed posters but I have a strong suspicion he didn't follow the instructions properly Hmm

I have a medal rack held up with command strips with about 18/20 heavy race medals hung from it and it's held steady for about 2 years.

NannyR · 20/01/2021 21:56

I use the hooks for all sorts of things and love them, but I used the specific frame ones to put up a picture frame, poster sized and they didn't hold it, it fell off the wall and smashed. I followed the instructions and it was a smooth, dry surface. I wouldn't risk using them again.

BrokenCircle · 20/01/2021 22:01

They didn’t work at all for us. We were hanging something below the weight stated, and it stayed up for a matter of minutes.

HarrietOh · 20/01/2021 22:03

I’ve got a few pictures up now holding up fine for many months. My DP has also done the same and no problem with his either!

TheFlis12345 · 20/01/2021 22:05

They hold up every picture in our house and not one has slipped in 3 years!

Lurkingforawhile · 20/01/2021 22:06

They work really well in our house. I use the strips for canvas and lighter art, and hooks for kitchen and bathroom, and some heavier prints

DifficultBloodyWoman · 20/01/2021 22:07

The Velcro command hooks fir picture frames are crap and have never worked for me.

The standard command hooks, on the other hand, hold up everything in my nouse. Only one has ever fallen down but that was a massive, heavy frame. It is back on the wall with two hooks now and no problems.

HintOfVintagePink · 20/01/2021 22:07

I’ve just today used two of the heavy ones (Velcro type attachment) to hang a framed picture which is 45cm x 30cm. I used a higher strength than was needed but I’m impressed so far. Easy to put up and has held fast.
Ask me again in the morning!

Crumpledmess · 20/01/2021 22:07

I used them to hang a curtain rail in a rented flat where I couldn't fix one to the wall. It worked brilliantly.
I do have one wall where they just don't stick. No idea why.
I find they come off cleanly if you hold the hook firmly in place and pull the tab slowly all the way down, keeping it close to the wall. It's worked so far anyway!

CostaDelCovid · 20/01/2021 22:07

They do come off cleanly if you pull the tag downwards as directed. If you're pulling it outwards then they definitely won't come off cleanly.
Pinkstars2501 · 20/01/2021 22:08

I've a few canvas pictures held up by them. They've been up 4 years, one strip on each vertical side.

My Ring doorbell is held up by them actually! It was a temporary measure because we weren't sure about drilling into our new composite door and the bricks are a bit to far over. So far it's holding very well and you wouldn't know it wasn't screwed in.

Skigal86 · 20/01/2021 22:10

We’ve used a few as our walls are awful to drill into. Got a couple of coat hooks attached with them, and they’ve stood up to our toddler pulling her coat on and off them, pictures have been fine, the only thing that didn’t hold was a small shelf with a photo frame on. It was well within the weight limit, the only thing I can think of is that it was a really warm day when I put it up and the sticky side didn’t stick properly to the wall.

SoupDragon · 20/01/2021 22:10

I was a fan until a large picture fell off my bathroom wall and shattered on the floor :(

Stompythedinosaur · 20/01/2021 22:12

I think they are brilliant. Every picture in out house is up with one!

poshme · 20/01/2021 22:20

I've had 6 different pictures fall off with either command strips or hooks.

Followed instructions to the letter. Used the right size for the weight.

I don't trust them now.

Catty1720 · 20/01/2021 22:54

I swear by them but make sure when you take them off you do it correctly or it will pull off the paint

diamondsr4u · 22/01/2021 18:02

Thanks all.

I will defo be using more than the required amount just to be on the safe side.

The canvas will be mounted above the radiator, will the heat have an impact on it?

That’s very odd, mine stick like glue. That would only happen if you’re not using enough or the right ones for the weight.

Op I’ve no idea about heat to be honest, none of mine are above radiators, but the house is generally warm and it’s fine

In truth I prefer just hammering a pic hook in the wall, it makes less mess when removed, it’s just a tiny hole, the paint always comes off when I remove command strips, but there are certain areas I can’t hammer nails in, Ie near pipes etc and command strips work fine

BertieBotts · 23/01/2021 08:44

They don't work in our house. I think it must depend on your wall surface. The only room they have worked in is the bathroom where we have smooth tile walls. The other walls are a bit textured and rough (Germany still fetishises woodchip Hmm) and I assume this is why.
