Edinburgh in August-where to stay?

Planning a trip to Edinburgh in August with 3 children under 7, I know the city a bit, but where would be a good location to get an air b n b? Walkable to city centre would be great. Thanks.

you’re optimistic!

Magicbabywaves · 20/01/2021 20:17

Anyone got a helpful comment?

Bruntisfield, Canonmills, Stockbridge all good areas close to the city centre but honestly, Air BnBs will be in short supply and very expensive in August. Come another time if you can.

NotCornflakes · 20/01/2021 20:22

You could also look at Marchmont and Newington.

unfortunateevents · 20/01/2021 20:24

You realise that Edinburgh in August is normally hideously expensive because of the Festival? They are still planning on having the Fringe this year so I expect although far fewer people will have made accommodation bookings yet than usual, the providers will be holding off making anything available cheaply yet. Do you have to go then?

1990s · 20/01/2021 20:26

OP unless you’re going for the Fringe I’d avoid August, the festival takes over the whole city, makes it really crowded, busy and accommodation very expensive and hard to find.

Magicbabywaves · 20/01/2021 20:28

I saw the main festival wasn’t on this year so thought it would be a good time to go! We’re going to Fife for a few days so wanted to stay in the capital for a bit. I do know it’s expensive then yes, but that’s ok, I just want area suggestions as it’s been a few years since I’ve been.

I would argue that the Fringe is actually bigger than the main festival (unless they scale it back which I really hope they will) so I don't honestly think it will make a difference to accommodation. You could easily do a day trip or two from Fife.

Knight Residence apartments! Lovely, I booked with booking.com

Magicbabywaves · 20/01/2021 20:40

We might do that Cornflakes. Believe it or not i have been to the fringe, but it was over 20 years ago!

the main festival isn’t your problem, it hardly exists compared to the fringe!

tootyfruitypickle · 20/01/2021 20:45

Hi OP, what negative replies! I have just booked 5 nights in Edinburgh for the last week of July in an Airbnb, got one 15 mins walk to the centre. Really looking forward to it ! Price went up from about 3rd I think.

1990s · 20/01/2021 20:47

Yes the price goes up from the 3rd August, because the festival runs for the whole of August, and that’s the first weekend!

Not negative, just the reason why it will be hard and expensive to find somewhere to stay in August.

theotherfossilsister · 20/01/2021 20:52

The Fringe will definitely be far smaller this year. I would say Canonmills is the best as it's near the botanics but walkable into town. Everything is pretty walkable here though.

tootyfruitypickle · 20/01/2021 20:52

There were loads in Airbnb for whole of August. I just booked earlier as it was cheaper and it doesn’t feel like a year I fancy the fringe ... it wasn’t unaffordable a week later, and I am skint, I just randomly clicked a week earlier and noticed it was cheaper then worked out why! Lots have free cancellation up to a week before.

Magicbabywaves · 20/01/2021 20:56

I have looked already of course, and I saw plenty of air b n bs at prices we’re happy to pay, I just wanted second opinions on locations!
Thanks all.

I stayed in Atholl Crescent or Atholl Lane (sorry, can't remember exactly what it was called but booked it through booking.com) in an airbnb with two teens two years ago. At the time I booked it I never even thought of the Fringe Festival. The location was perfect - it was off Prince's Street (opposite end to the train station) in a quiet laneway and it took us about 15 minutes to walk up to the Royal Mile. We loved Edinburgh - one of the best cities we've been to.

Stockbridge. Like a wee village with lots of amenities (and charity shops, if that's your thing!), but within easy walking distance of the city centre.
Stocky has been voted as one of the top places to live in the UK.
