Toast Toppers

After reading the thread about products we would like to bring back I decided to try to recreate bacon and mushroom Toast Toppers. I microwaved 2 chopped up mushrooms and mixed them with a couple of heaped tablespoons of condensed mushroom soup and half a slice of chopped up ham and some black pepper. Then put it under the grill on thick toast. It was delicious, very similar to the real thing. There is about two thirds of the soup left so I might have this every day for lunch.

Cor yum. I loved toast toppers as a child.

Bbq1 · 20/01/2021 17:29

Ooh, will try that. Loved toast toppers.

52andblue · 20/01/2021 17:31

I remember them. But not fondly!
(though I do like 'sandwich spread' which is also a 1970's staple)
Glad you enjoyed your recreation though :)

Oh I loved the cheese and ham one. I've tried to recreate it many times but failed.

Autumnchill · 20/01/2021 17:35

These were an absolute treat in our house growing up (80s, 5 of us). Might have to try and get some

Thecomfortador · 20/01/2021 17:37

Might have to try this!

AtAmber · 20/01/2021 18:03

I've tried before with tinned creamed mushrooms and bacon. It's much nicer with the soup. I used to have Toast Toppers as my treat lunch if everyone was out and I was very put out when they were discontinued.

I actually emailed heinz to complain when they were discontinued.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 21/01/2021 13:29

I have never heard of toast toppers can someone’s explain, were they like the little tubs of preprepared sandwich filling (egg mayo, tuna &sweetcorn, coronation chicken)you get in the fridges at the supermarket?

BarbaraofSeville · 21/01/2021 13:33

I think they had raw egg in them, there was a stern warning about not eating without toasting.

For cheese and ham, I would beat an egg and then mix in enough chopped ham and grated cheese to bind. You could get fancy and add things like chopped spring onion, mustard, or mushroom soup, but it's up to you.

AtAmber · 21/01/2021 20:58

@AtleastitsnotMonday - they were in a little tin, about the size of a tomato puree tin. I remember bacon and mushroom, cheese and ham and pizza varieties. You spread them on hot buttered toast then grilled them until hot. They were quite popular in the 70's when I was growing up and were discontinued 3 or 4 years ago.

Just seen this and wanted to say thanks @AtAmber. As a child in the 70s Toast Toppers were our staple Sunday teatime treat. Am going to get hold of some mushroom soup and have a go!!

Holothane · 26/01/2021 17:38

I adored these and I still have sandwich spread in the summer.

FrogFairy · 26/01/2021 18:39

@AtAmber you clever thing!

Will be adding condensed soup to my shopping list.
My tastebuds thank you, my waistline will not but fuck it, gotta have a bit of what you fancy Grin

AtAmber · 27/01/2021 19:20

Davros · 27/01/2021 19:52

Ooh I loved them. And Big Doup when it first came out. Then the bits in Big Soup got smaller and smaller Sad

newtb · 27/01/2021 21:37

Sandwich spread and cucumber spread were around in the 50s and 60s.

Wilsonwilson · 27/01/2021 23:15

My mam liked one of them it smelt like sick.

Leeds2 · 27/01/2021 23:23

I never had them. My mum, who believe me was no cook, refused to buy them! As a result, I lusted after them!!

lightlypoached · 28/01/2021 04:09

@Davros re Bug Soup: "soup for lunch mum, but why do we need the forks ? ". On the advert when it first came out Grin

Davros · 28/01/2021 18:22

I was just reminiscing about Gloy with its little pocket for the spatula. Not to eat though

I've got a very good recipe for the cheese and ham Toast Topper if anyone would like it. I've tried lots of different ways to recreate the original over the past 7 years and the trick is, although I hate to say it, just don't use especially high quality ingredients! Too much real cheese and it doesn't stay gloopy and spreadable at room temperature, too much high quality pancetta and you don't get the white fatty blobs that passed for ham! One long bank holiday weekend and about 3kg of toast topper experiments later and I think I've cracked it! It even burns your tongue in the same way as the originals!

I didn't really like the other two flavours that they had at the end (below marked*) so it would be more difficult for me to recreate them. A online search has revealed many flavours that I don't remember at all, maybe they weren't all available in the UK, but I do remember loving the cheese and onion one although I only had it once or twice. Here's the list of the labels I've seen in period ads on line (in no particular order):
Curried Chicken
Chicken and Mushroom*
Mushroom and Bacon*
Turkey and Ham
Ham and Cheese
Cheese and Onion
Cheese and Tomato
Cheese and Bacon
Tomato and Onion
Savoury Beef Mince
Savoury Mushroom
Lambs Frys Bacon (??)
Onions and Lambs Frys (again, ???)
Savoury Mince
Any advances on these? I've seen mention of a pizza version but I can find a photo anywhere and there may be some confusion with an add that ran 'When it's too late for a pizza delivery'

There was also an Onion Spread variant produced sometime in the mid to late 70's although it wasn't around for long.
