How often do you clean with a dog?

I like my house to be clean (as most people do) but struggle when my partner comes over with his dog. He visits every Friday and stays until Tuesday as we don’t live together and he is my extended household. Only issue is, he has a black retriever that sheds like nobody’s business and I have to Hoover every single day as I have a light laminate floor (if I had it my way I’d Hoover every few hours because I’m anal about having hair and stuff stuck to my socks).

I also mop the floor every two days when he is over. As I’ve never had a dog before I am struggling to adapt to the mess (including wet saturated squeezy toys and bits of chews on the floor) - my two cats are no issues and make little to no mess.

I find myself cleaning after the dog constantly whilst my partner thinks I am being too paranoid and would happily not Hoover for a 2/3days. How often realistically so you mop and Hoover with a dog the size of a retriever?

Hoover and mop every day, sometimes twice. We have big hairy dogs too.

Unfortunately you will have to learn to live with the mess if you want to live with the dog, there’s no way round it!

Santaiscovidfree · 20/01/2021 16:36

You need to train it up better.
And I don't mean the ddog. Red flag imo showing little regard for your home.
I have 4 ddogs.. Sweep bloody toy innards most days. And feathers escaping from ddog beds... Not much hair tbh!! Husky during her shedding weeks a totally different story...

Constantly cleaning and my dog thankfully doesn't loose hair. I'm always paranoid about 'dog' smells

I have a Retriever and no carpets.
I hoover most days and mop the whole downstairs every 2 or 3 days with a quick going over with the spray mop if there are muddy paw prints
It’s not your dog though, you shouldn’t be the one doing the cleaning up after it

Collidascope · 20/01/2021 16:44

I have a white retriever. I only hoover every 2 or 3 days because I'm lazy. I mop once a week. The hair does take some getting used to. Can you tell your partner that the deal is he hoovers daily if he wants to bring the dog?

Twospaniels · 20/01/2021 16:46

I have two spaniels. One seems to shed all the time and the other doesn’t.
I probably vacuum every other day and mop twice a week. I have all hard flooring.
I sometimes do it more often especially if there are muddy paw prints too.

I think if I were you and the dog isn’t a constant presence then I would vacuum and mop after say two days and then a thorough one again when the dog returns to its own home.

Don’t be a slave to your floors!

Anonymouscat20 · 20/01/2021 16:47

@Hoppinggreen I totally agree but my partner and I have different standards (which worries me for the future as we might just not be compatible enough to cohabitate). If I left it up to him then my house just wouldn’t be up to my standards and I would feel uncomfortable in my own house . I know I am a bit difficult to live with (or so he makes me feel) as I like thing to be clean all the time. But this is all good information as I thought maybe I was cleaning too much!

Hairy dog .. hard floors downstairs. I use a rubber broom daily to sweep up fluff and biscuit crumbs and mop once or twice a week.. tho it feels pointless at the moment with this weather! Hoover upstairs twice a week.

combatbarbie · 20/01/2021 16:51

I have a short haired but large dog and need to put the hoover over every day even though his hair is the same colour as my floors....when the sun comes through the window it shows up so much!

My mum has rotties and they are a nightmare for shedding, so much so she actually changed the floors so she couldn't see it as much.

Howmanysleepsnow · 20/01/2021 16:55

I have a robot hoover and set him off once or twice a day. Life changing!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 20/01/2021 16:55

I have hardwood floors - no rugs. Three small dogs - all non-shedding and one Cavalier who drops hair like flower petals at a wedding! I vacuum once a week, sweep twice a week, and mop daily.

underneaththeash · 20/01/2021 16:58

Far much more than we did before dog and he's non-shedding. I'm quietly losing the war on mud.......

vivavino · 20/01/2021 17:02

One big hairy dog and hoover every day, twice a day when he's moulting heavily. Mop one a week as he doesn't like getting muddy. He doesn't go on furniture so a quick hoover round to keep on top of it only takes 10 mins.

limesoda · 20/01/2021 17:04

Quick swizz round with the hoover ever day, mop once a week.

morekidsthanhands · 20/01/2021 17:05

Regular brushing with something like a furminator makes all the difference. Dog groomers also often do special grooms for shedding dogs. Maybe you could ask that he brushes the dog before they arrive as q compromise?

I have a beagle that sheds a lot and it has truly made a difference brushing daily. That said I still vac the main areas twice a day but more for the kids mess!

Drinkarsefeck · 20/01/2021 17:07

Two labs, seven cats. Vacuum daily and also set away the Eufy on an afternoon. Kitchen floor is mopped twice daily minimum.

SimonJT · 20/01/2021 17:08

I vacuum (well, eufy does) daily and I clean hardfloors daily, I also did before I had a dog.

raspberrysundaes · 20/01/2021 17:09

We have a beagle and three cats.

The cats shed more than the dog Hmm - we vacuum at least once a day (sometimes twice), and hard floors are swept twice a day and steam-mopped a couple of times a week too.

We also have throws on the sofa that are washed weekly (as are cushion covers), and bedding is changed weekly too.

TheMandalorian · 20/01/2021 17:11

I think you need a robot hoover.
I would not consider cohabiting just yet either. This needs compromise on both sides. Something to think about a bit more.

CommunistLegoBloc · 20/01/2021 17:13

Eufy every day. Mop three times a week. No carpets (I don't like them, it's not a practical decision). Dog is large but short haired and low shed.

Stompythedinosaur · 20/01/2021 17:49

We have a roomba which is great for staying on top of dog hair.

That said, I dont think any particular harm will come from a couple of day's dog hair.

I think it can be tricky as a non-animally person to tolerate a partner's pets. I guess it is basically down to whether you like someone enough to put up with their pets!
