I have tried to find my answer through all the links and infomation ..but I am still unsure of something , if anyone could help me .

Both my parents were born in the ROI and have Irish passports .

I was born in the UK and have a British passport .

If I have read it correctly I can apply for an Irish passport without having to register with the Foreign Births thing .

But dc would as a grandchild .

If I apply and get an Irish passport first ..can he then apply on the back of my passport ..or do we still need to do the Foreign Births register for him as well ?

I was b

You can get a passport but your grandchild will need to apply for citizenship then get passport. I need to sort mine out too!

flourella · 19/01/2021 22:37

He still needs to go on the foreign births register to become a citizen, then he can obtain a passport.

Margaritawithlime · 19/01/2021 22:39

As everyone said yes to the foreign births registry. To give you an idea mine had their applications for the FBR submitted in October 2019 and they’re still not processed Sad

titchy · 19/01/2021 22:39

Your dc needs to get on the FBR. He/she could only acquire citizenship if you had an Irish passport at the time of his birth.

It'll take forever by the way...!

bizzey · 19/01/2021 22:40

He is not my grandchild he is my son .
Sorry if not clear .

I read it as him being your son. He is not an Irish citizen at present and needs to apply to be put on the FBR.

Margaritawithlime · 19/01/2021 22:44

So you automatically get the passport as you were born to a citizen of Ireland by birth (I think) and then your son has to go on the FBR and once that’s processed can apply for a passport. Do yours first.
You’ll need birth certificates for your parent/s too so have a good look at what you need and get it all together

Thank you everyone so much !
That saved me being on hold to someone/some office !.
I had read it takes ages .
Thats ok.

Is there a way around it ..as in I do the registry thing ..and then all 3 Dcs jist need to do passport ..or would all 3 of them still need to do the FBR ?

Ahh do I need my passport before he can apply for his ?
Can he do it without me having an Irish passport ?

OP posts:
bizzey · 19/01/2021 22:49

As he will still have to register anyway ?

flourella · 19/01/2021 22:49

No, there isn't a way around it, sorry!

There is no reason to sort out your passport first, OP. My dad is an English-born Irish citizen the same as you, and I could (and want to, at some point) apply to go on the FBR despite him having never had an Irish passport. You and your son will need documentation proving your connection to your Irish-born parents, but your future Irish passport won't be necessary for his application.

bizzey · 19/01/2021 23:04

Thank you again everyone .
I have all my parents documents .
Origional BC ' s ..I I mean the real origional's ! (Dated 1939 !)
Both passports , though mums has expired and dad has passed away .and their marriage certificate if needed.
My birth certifiacte and his which obviouly has my parents names on .
I was not married when he was born so his birth certificate has mine , my parents surname .
Think we should have enough.
Now I know we wont get this done for September, it helps him work out where to do his year abroad with Uni .(fingets crossed !)

You are already Irish so just need to apply for your passport. Because you didn't get it before your kids were born you do need to get them on the foreign birth register before they get theirs. You don't need to physically have your passport first. Their application to get on the register will be via their grandparents.

Glenorma · 19/01/2021 23:17

You are automatically an Irish citizen. You don’t need to apply for an Irish passport at all (unless you want one). Your DC need to be on the FBR - this does not require you to possess an Irish passport. It takes a very long time and the documentation can be tricky to get right because they are very specific about exactly how it has to be done.
