How much work do you do with your child and what if you don't understand yourself. The maths is beyond me and its primary maths. School gives recorded lesson then worksheets but I cant help with them or help to explain.Bit worried
Have emailed school asking if possible maths club or something online

Dp has to be around to support the dc most of the time (I'm a nurse so around less often). Not exactly teaching but generally encouraging them. I've had loads of bits i didn't understand, I just google for a website to explain of sometimes watch the video with the dc.

I'm a primary teacher. Can I help at all?

Thepilotlightsgoneout · 19/01/2021 20:01

Oh god, I can’t do the maths either. So if she’s stuck (Year 7), I Google it and if that’s no help, we just leave that question and move on. What else am I supposed to do?!

Thank you I think she gets it but likes reassurance so will do the exercises and say is this right etc. I'm wondering about a tutor tbh even if just fortnightly or even seeing if I can think of someone with an older child who is good at maths and would be happy to provide encouragement online obviously

Tutoring is a good idea as you can watch them in action and feel more confident with it all too. Message anytime if you need help though.

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/01/2021 15:19

Tutoring has been excellent for me, especially helping me learn how to teach my DD who has additional needs. You can see how the tutor works with them and mine gives me lots of advice and support when I’m working with them at home.

Beaniecats · 20/01/2021 19:30

Thanks all x I have messaged a couple of tutors, also a friends 18 year old a level maths student has kindly offered to provide a bit of help which is really fabulous

My two need a lot of hand holding to do anything to the point that I can't do them together, unless its the same thing and they are both in a good mood.

I'm fine with their curriculum content. My y5 is on long multiplication which I can handle... fortunately he likes long division because that's always been a massive blindspot that my brain refuses to compute.
