Hi everyone, posting on here for traffic.

I am looking at the Bill Bryson text "Bear Encounter" and he describes the bear as "400 pounds of ravenous fur."
Is he using a particular literary device here?

Any help greatly appreciated.

He is using metonymy: the fur stands in for the bear.

Personifying the fur (the fur isn’t hungry; the bear is)

Or hyperbole (the fur doesn’t weigh 400lb)

I teach English. I’ve never heard of this. Thank you! Every day is a school day Grin

A bear could well weigh 400 lbs, they are massive!

In this specific case it’s a synecdoche.
