Why don't supermarkets sell pocket money toys?

Why do supermarkets sell such crappy toys for kids ??! I sometimes want to treat my dd to a toy when she has been good and we usuallyend up looking in supermarkets. I was so fed up with the crap yesterday ! Overpriced plasticy tat, tiny expensive cuddly toys and don't get me started on lol dolls!!! Growing up we used to have pocket money toys things you could buy that didn't cost the earth.

What are you imagining? I can't think of much that would be 'pocket money' that isn't tiny plastic tat.

BoyTree · 19/01/2021 07:43

What kind of thing do you want? I don't remember this being particularly different when I was younger - I was probably only looking at the sweets though!

inappropriateraspberry · 19/01/2021 07:47

This is now where Poundland, B&M etc have come in. They do the cheap toys. I agree though, they are expensive in a supermarket. And don't get me started on kids magazines!Better off getting her something food based.

I know what you mean. Wilkos have a section that sell like little balls and springs etc that are normally a pound or more.

schmockdown · 19/01/2021 07:48

Pocket money toys are plastic tat!

squeekums · 19/01/2021 07:50

Yeah sorry, the selection is small and fad like cos it's not a huge money maker for stores, it's what will move fast and easy.
Food makes their money.
Toys there to keep kids quiet and maybe squeeze a tiny bit more cash out of mum and dad, like lollies at the checkout
They not there to sell gender neutral, educational, eco friendly specialist toys, plus you think pocket money will buy that?
Pocket money value toys are small and plastic generally

lollipoprainbow · 19/01/2021 07:58

@squeekums I didn't say I wanted anything gender neutral or eco friendly just something that isn't crap costing over £10. A prime example was a burrito teddy thing a tiny cuddly toy wrapped in a fake burrito £10!!!!!!

I don't know how much pocket money we're talking about here, but I can't imagine anything that isn't flimsy, throwaway rubbish. I was a child in the seventies and even back then my mum used to despair at the sort of plastic crap I came home with (in the olden days when 5 year olds were allowed to go to the shop by themselvesGrin) She needed to give me more money if she wanted me to buy something more worthy!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/01/2021 08:08

I’d have thought any pocket money toys would almost certainly be plastic tat anyway.

lollipoprainbow · 19/01/2021 08:08

It's more the price that I'm pissed of about there was nothing under £10.

luxxlisbon · 19/01/2021 08:09

I think this is you looking back with rose tinted glasses. Anything that can be manufactured and sold for the amount of a young child’s pocket money is going to be cheap tat. Nothing has changed.

Coulddowithanap · 19/01/2021 08:11

We've had some good 'pocket money' toys from tesco for less than £10.

Things like mini bopit, Simon and card games like dobble have been great fun. Sometimes they have lego on offer too so the small packs are reasonably priced.

lollipoprainbow · 19/01/2021 08:11

@luxxlisbon it's not cheap that's my point !!

CasperGutman · 19/01/2021 08:13

Do your children think the cheap stuff available in the supermarket is any good? If they actually quite like it, it's probably for the same reasons you think the pocket money toys of your childhood were okay!

alienspiderbee · 19/01/2021 08:14

My local Tesco has loads of toys that are sub 10

TitInATrance · 19/01/2021 08:19

Supermarkets aren’t the place to go for pocket money toys; Poundland, stationers, toy shops are the places you need to look. Souvenir shops if you happen to live in a holiday area.

Some of those aren’t open at the moment because they are non-essential. Especially now when it’s not even a month past Christmas.

eeliie · 19/01/2021 08:19

Have you looked by the party isle? In my local Tesco they have party bag fillers that are quite cheap. Things like mini slinky's and bubbles.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 19/01/2021 08:19

Books? Stickers? Pens? Magazines? I know the magazines are expensive and a rare treat for mine but they are under £10
Wilkos are cheaper for more toys and our local book shop has a selection but I appreciate that they are closed and we are lucky to have them

Depending on age could you try each supermarket trip you earn a sticker and then get a bigger toy after 5 trips?

LittleRa · 19/01/2021 08:19

In the supermarket, try the party section- they usually have party bag fillers which are packs of 6-8 bouncy balls, mini bubbles, mini puzzles, mini animal figures, mini bat and ball games, mini slinky springs etc. Yes they’re still absolutely still plastic tat, but cheaper than toys in the toy aisle.

Ha ha cross post!
Ilovemaisie · 19/01/2021 08:21

I shop mostly at Sainsbury's or Tesco. Both sell loads of decent toys at under £5. Obviously it will depend what your child is into. Off the top of my head there's usually Lego (various prices but polybags/small sets are under a fiver), Hot Wheels Cars (if they have own brand they are often something like £1 or even less) card games like Top Trumps etc, loads of the 'collectables' type stuff, doll accessories like outfits. There's arts and craft kits. Small jigsaws.
If you want cheap pocket money toys then it will be cheap rubbish. The quality of the toys that Poundland sells has got worse in the last few years because they simply cannot source quality stuff that can be sold for £1.

eeliie · 19/01/2021 08:21

@LittleRa great minds Wink

LadyCatStark · 19/01/2021 08:30

Asda do, or did I haven’t been in a long time, they’re literally labelled pocket money toys!

MaskingForIt · 19/01/2021 08:34

They may not have cost much money, but they certainly cost the Earth. Thank goodness we’ve moved away from mass-produced cheap tat. I can’t think why you’d want to buy that crap for your child. You’re just indoctrinating her into consumerism.

Camomila · 19/01/2021 08:35

The metal match box cars or wooden individual train wagons in Asda are pretty good, occasionally they also sell surprise bags with 1 playmobil figure in. The cars are what DS1 usually gets as a treat.
