Am I too pernickety?

If you notice someone , maybe in the public eye but not a politician, tells little lies that are totally trivial, have no effect on anyone else, and are supposedly for comic effect , would that make you disbelieve in their whole persona? It really annoys me but I know that is a total irrelevance to anything and anybody. Of course I really believe it matters enormously as every little thing counts. But does any one else?

So a celebrity that tells lies?

Frownette · 19/01/2021 06:24

Not necessarily; they may just be trying to deflect people from their private life and protect it. It can't be easy being in the glare of the public eye.

Depends on the scenario really. That reminds me of a quote by Herodotus, I've got it here so if I find it I'll post it.

I would agree with that , Frownette, I certainly don't believe anyone has any right to the' truth' about anyone's life. The public eye would be my idea of Hell. Or to know all about their family, this is volunteered information supposed to amuse. And we all tell lies, big or little.

Sparklingbrooke , It's just in the kind of cases I have noticed they are such small, small, untruths, supposedly funny but have even taken aback the person being spoken to. It's entirely personal to me and trivial but so annoying and not funny. In my opinion. I am also developing a deep hatred of celebrity disingenuousness, but that is another matter. I am keeping my own private cancellation list. The hatred and anger come in because they are being paid public money by the way. None of my business if they are doing it in private time or for private hire.

Can you give some examples OP?

Battytwatty · 19/01/2021 08:59

And no, I don’t think you are being pernickey. It would put me off people in the public eye too.

How do you know they are untruths? I think I am going to need an example here.

OK I said it is absolutely trivial, hence my title, but saying they never went out to parties when the interviewee had just bee nat one with the person and was audibly surprised. Silly I know and meant in jest but profoundly irritating when part of public persona, and makes me feel deeply patronised. I know they do say if you can fake sincerity you can suceed in showbusiness, but double bluffing is just infurating to me. Yes I know I am being pernickety. was going to write irrational, but it is not that. Also I do think, it's fair to judge on personal matters when what is being sold is the personality.
