Talk to me about IKEA dining chairs....

I'm sat at the dining table a significant proportion of the day but my beloved dining chairs are dying. The faux leather upholstery is peeling off and the legs are dying one by one.

Whatever I get have got to be comfortable and have the option for a cushion if not upholstered. Are ikea chairs any good? I like the look. Or any recommendations for a leather/faux leather dining chair available online

those ones are really good, and the covers are machine washable www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/henriksdal-chair-oak-vibberbo-black-beige-s59337104/

KatharinaRosalie · 18/01/2021 22:10

I have these ones and they’re wearing well 3 years in. I got some dark grey seat pads for them from IKEA too.

I would never buy dining chairs that only have a leg at each corner & no connectors (they’re called stretchers) - unless you can guarantee that they’ll only ever be sat on very gently Grin

Hazelnutlatteplease · 18/01/2021 22:17

@KatharinaRosalie I wondered about those. Are the covers easy to get off?

@RedLimoncello would you be happy to sit all day in them? (Homeschooling DS permanently and big board game fans)

@GiantKitten help!! I have no idea what you mean Blush What are stretchers? Dont most chair legs have legs in the corners?

Ah I need new dining chairs with padded seats too!
I def need stretchers - the legs get loose on all mine where people drag them in and out under the table on kitchen tiles. I'm always having to tighten the bolts.

MenaiMna · 18/01/2021 22:34

Stretchers are the brace pieces further down the legs. Either a strip of wood from leg to leg (therefore four horizontal strips) or crossing each other from corner to corner depending on the style of chair. They strengthen the structure. If you Google classic bentwood cafe chair and you will see a round stretcher halfway between seat and floor.

GiantKitten · 18/01/2021 22:38

Traditional kitchen chairs generally have stretchers going front to back with a joining piece across the middle. Holds the whole thing together.
Like this.
They’re very sturdy, and last forever, but not very stylish.

Ikea Henriksdal are very sturdy. Had ours for well over 10 years. They had lovely moleskin type covers that sadly Ikea don't make anymore. Retighten the legs every couple of years and you're good to go. Was gutted when we had to sell them.

mineofuselessinformation · 18/01/2021 22:47

I've had the basic henriksdal chairs for donkeys' years. (No padding or cushions.)
They are still going strong.
I've always used seat pads on them, and now have covers too which go over the back and seat base.
I might paint them so they go better with my current decor, but wouldn't get rid of them because they are good.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 18/01/2021 22:47

Thank you I never knew that had a name!!

That has left my rather conundrums. I do not have light handed kids but the chairs I have now dont have stretchers. But they are dying on the legs (I'm down to three from 6). That said they are a good 8 years old and not new when I bought them!

Appearance wise most the ones I like are similar to the henriksdal, although non wipe down seats are a little scary. Actually these do do. Cang help thinking wood is more sustainable though

Oh that is really good about the henriksdal!!!

I've got the ikea VOLFGANG at either end of the kitchen table. Me, the dh, the dcs the dog and the cat all make a beeline for them. Had them ages and they still look and feel like new.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 18/01/2021 23:21

@mineofuselessinformation did you mean the henriksdal or one of the wooden ones? I think the henriksdal only comes padded?

OP posts:
Hazelnutlatteplease · 18/01/2021 23:23

Sone of the wood ones do have stretchers.

Although that's really good to know on the VOLFGANG. I previously wondered about a dark green one which is a similar shape (although not as nicely padded)

Hi, @Hazelnutlatteplease.
Yes, I am talking about the Henriksdal.
Back when I got them, you could either buy the upholstered version, or 'naked' so to speak.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 18/01/2021 23:44

Ahh thank you that makes sense.
