Tell me your best recipe books

Looking for your best recipe books for family dinners. Ones which don't always require odd/rare ingredients which you only use for that single recipe and the rest dies in the cupboard/fridge preferably...

Very open to all ideas. Meat, vegetarian, vegan, we will try it!

Love all the Hairy Bikers books. Really easy to follow and a good mix of quick and longer cooks. Really don't like Jamie Oliver, I find the way he writes his recipes to follow while cooking at the same time! I have a Kindle subscription and get Good Food, Delicious and Olive magazines through that every month and they are always full of inspiration. I also like Pinch of Nom for when I'm wanting to lose a couple of pounds, but we all want to eat the same meal.

The Green Roasting Tin - one dish dinners. Half the recipes are vegan, half vegetarian and they're arranged by how long they take to cook (quick, medium, slow). I think there might be a non-veggie version too?

Ds (16) does most of the cooking here. Thug Kitchen is probably the book he uses the most. Lots of stewy, soupy things, and stuff like burritos, big bowls of pasta, noodles etc. Vegan, but no odd ingredients (except nutritional yeast which is easy to find and lasts for ages)

Ooh think my mum has plenty of the hairy biker ones, might have to pinch those!

I use the bbc good food website most for those sort of recipes. Their small 200 recipe books on various themes are good too.

I agree with the green roasting tin suggestion. Also Jamie Oliver (who I find annoying but like his recipes).

Dippysauceus · 18/01/2021 19:49

@Unmute They are great - there's three altogether I think (well we have three)

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 18/01/2021 20:30

Nigella How to Eat.

Nothing comes close.

drumst1ck · 18/01/2021 20:41

@ChardonnaysPetDragon is she as irritating in a book as she is on TV though?...

Save with Jamie. It has a recipe for a Sunday roast then meals for the leftovers, plus other quick, easy family dinners. I'd say we eat something from it most weeks. This week it's chowder made with leftover roast chicken from Sunday.

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 18/01/2021 20:51

I was going to say the Nigella as well. The Mumsnet cookbook is also really good Smile

BobbinAround · 18/01/2021 20:52

I've just got the Doctor's Kitchen 3-2-1 and it has lots of recipes that I'm looking forward to trying. I also like the Hairy Bikers - particularly the 'one-pot' one.

That said I use BBC Good Food for nearly everything. I got rid of loads of cookery books last year as I never used them.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 18/01/2021 20:55

It's her first book, so she's not so much in character there. Having said that, I don't find her annoying.

CCSS15 · 18/01/2021 20:56

Jamie 5 ingredients is fab - we use it all the time.

Nadiya Hussain a time to eat is also really good

EwwSprouts · 18/01/2021 21:09

Nigella express is fab.
For just a bit different Bill Granger's Easy

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 18/01/2021 21:32

I second Save with Jamie, I have used it loads. I like the Hairy Bikers 'healthy' ones too. This thread is making me realise that although I love looking at my recipe books, I generally look recipes up online to actually cook 🤔 I've been watching a few Jamie programmes this week and got some great ideas. Um.... Eat Well for Less is good for family friendly fare. I also like Nigel Slaters Real Food. Oh, and the Helmsley sisters books for healthier stuff.
