So I'm considering up a small enterprise (if that's the right word) , buying in bulk then selling on. I'd probably use eBay and PayPal (I'm an experienced eBayer - far too much money has been spent on there!)

I've been reading through gov.uk, at things like distance selling regs, VAT, tax..... My head is spinning.

I don't expect a large turnover but any reasonable amount of profit will come in handy. I'll obviously register with HMRC (that's another kettle of fish by the looks of it) but does anyone have any advice or pointers?

To clarify - the stage I'm at is literally zero - I haven't purchased any stock as yet as I want to do it properly and not get myself into a mess or miss something important. I know what I'll need (hardware wise) but it's more the official stuff I could use some advice on

Thanks in advance!

Register with HMRC and enjoy your first tax return Grin VAT registration is for over 50k I think. You can register as sole trader, partnership or company.
If you plan to sell in person / at events you'll need public liability insurance. If you employ anyone you'll need employers insurance and payroll software (the HMRC one is fine). That's pretty much it unless it's handmade or imported. Bookkeeping will help.
Distance selling regulations obligate you to accept returns, but from a customer service perspective you should have a fuss free returns policy anyway. Read up on your obligations.
Don't forget to factor in the extortionate ebay and PayPal fees when working out numbers and put aside cash for tax bills.
