I can’t swallow the capsules

I feel so ridiculous writing this. I don’t usually have a problem taking medication but these new capsules the doctor has prescribed just won’t go down.
I’ve tried tipping my head toward and either the water goes down tablet doesn’t or I just seem incapable of swallowing at all. Has anyone got any other tried and tested methods to make the capsules go down? Is it just a case of keep trying?

@Thenthatsthatthen how's it going with the capsules now — any success?

Thenthatsthatthen · 21/01/2021 22:58

@HeadphoneProliferation no success in swallowing them whole, ive tried pretty much everything suggested on here but I’ve made myself sick twice now trying so I’ve given up. but I spoke to the pharmacist who said it’s fine to cut them in half and swallow them in two bits so I’ve been doing that.

Make yourself a bit of toast or something else bready. Take a large bite and chew it up. Take the capsule, open your mouth and push it into the middle of the chewed up lump of food. Swallow your mouthful all in one go.

This always works for my niece, she hates taking pills, just can't get them down, she says they stick to her tongue.

Ah great, you found a solution. Glad the pharmacist was helpful.

If it's a true capsule, i.e. a powder insider a plasticy feeling case, I bite then gently with water in my mouth so they fill up a bit. I can't swallow them if they are floating about, running on the roof of my mouth. Gag. So I have to make them sink a bit.

As others have said ....take them with food - if that's allowed. Chew a mouthful of biscuit, pop capsule in and swallow biscuit & capsule. It's so much easier than trying to swallow with water.

Gingaaarghpussy · 22/01/2021 00:11

I generally start with the capsule under my tongue, take a mouthful of water and sling the while lot back while swallowing. I kinda bring my tongue down so the capsule bounces as well.
It's hard to describe. It's taken me thinks to perfect this method, it also stops foul tasting tablets from making me gag.

Meant to be easiest using a sports bottle.

Of need to swallow it would you consider something like gloup medication gel.

I had swallowing issues for a year as a result of some treatment and found it tricky to swallow pills which was unfortunate at the time as I was on over 65 pills a day so that was great fun as you will appreciate, my speech therapist at the time recommended a spray called Pill Glide it seems to be permanently out of stock on Amazon now but they have gloup which is the same, basically a lube for medication swallowing.

@HoneysuckIejasmine you genius, that worked perfectly. Capsule down in one and no awful taste.Thank you!

Well that tip needs publishing on billboards or something — never heard it before but yes, it's the floatiness of capsules that makes them so awful.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 22/01/2021 16:18

Ha ha! I'm glad it worked! Capsule design is such that they do contain quite a bit of air because of manufacturing methods. I hate them! Floaty bastards.

Capsules of things like paracetamol are so pointless. Why would I pay a premium price for a floaty capsule when I can pay much less for an old fashioned pressed powder pill?!

Although there's quite interesting psychology behind the colours of capsules etc, patients can be influenced to feel certain ways about their medicine based in it's colour. So it has its uses.

As a kid I had to take all tablets with a tiny bit of potato mash powder and water. As I've got older I can now manage other food!
